What's your base pack weight?

A place to chat about gear and the philosphy of ultralight. Ultralight bushwalking or backpacking focuses on carrying the lightest and simplest kit. There is still a good focus on safety and skill.
Forum rules
Ultralight Bushwalking/backpacking is about more than just gear lists. Ultralight walkers carefully consider gear based on the environment they are entering, the weather forecast, their own skill, other people in the group. Gear and systems are tested and tweaked.
If you are new to this area then welcome - Please remember that although the same ultralight philosophy can be used in all environments that the specific gear and skill required will vary greatly. It is very dangerous to assume that you can just copy someone else's gear list, but you are encouraged to ask questions, learn and start reducing the pack weight and enjoying the freedom that comes.

Common words
Base pack backpacking the mass of the backpack and the gear inside - not including consumables such as food, water and fuel
light backpacking base weight less than 9.1kg
ultralight backpacking base weight less than 4.5kg
super-ultralight backpacking base weight less than 2.3kg
extreme-ultralight backpacking base weight less than 1.4kg

What's your base pack weight?

Postby Onestepmore » Sat 20 Jul, 2013 6:28 pm

Out of interest, what are the general base pack weights people are carrying?

Whats is the breakdown of
/pack
/shelter system
/sleep system
/cooking system
/extra clothing (ie not that which you'd wear while walking)
/personal items (eg toiletries, first aid and repair kit etc)
/water treatment and storage
/electricals such as phone, GPS, PLB, light batteries etc
/other random things

Using the above definitiions

'Base pack backpacking the mass of the backpack and the gear inside - not including consumables such as food, water and fuel
light backpacking base weight less then 9.1kg
ultralight backpacking base weight less then 4.5kg
super-ultralight backpacking base weight less then 2.3kg
extreme-ultralight backpacking base weight less then 1.4kg
'

Lets give a few scenarios, as people generally have differnet gear set ups:

a) A weekend overnight trip with on-trail walking in spring/summer/autumn
b) A 5 day walk in above seasons
c) A three day winter trip in mountainous country with the possibility of winds and bad weather

If you want to include a differnt scenario - go ahead and elaborate

edit - added water treatment

Hmmm will be tough as my gear is in storage at present due to our move but I have guestamates of most items

Pack-
TNF alteo 35- 1.3kg (can easily do an overnighter with this).
Golite Pinnacle- ~900g.

Shelter-
Bearpawwd cuben mid ~600g
Aarn pacer 1 for 4 season stuff 1.3kg
Dreamhammocks dangerbird ~700g with
TRG prospecting tarp 500g
Oh and golite SL5 for family duties

Sleeping
Exped synmat UL7 <500g
Rab top bag 0* 500g
Enlightened Equipment Rev X 10*F quilt for cold stuff (can combine with top bag for really cold stuff) ~900g (I think...I cant remember)
Leighlo 20*F underquilt ~450g
DIY synthetic underquilt with climashield apex..good to about 0* ~450g

Cooking
Packafeather XL metho stove plus vargo titanium 750ml pot. Cant recall weight but not much
Primus eta solo 365g
Fuel obviously depends on trip
Matches/sml bic lighter
Ti caldera cone
Small silicon mits for handling hot things

Ive got a sil bag full of my medical suplies and another with toiletries. Ive never weighed them but they are not too bad (mind you comprehensive..I would never skimp on first aid stuff and am guilty of carrying enough for others).

Clothes (weights unknown I'll update later)
Patagonia down sweater or montane prism synthetic
Montane featherlite smock
OR aspire jacket
Mountain Hardwear epic pants
OR radiant fleece
Thermals to sleep in (weight will vary on season)
If really cold also berghaus fleece pants.
Undies
Bald rock down beenie
Buff (normal in 3 season, merino in colder weather...mind you this is usually worn so prob not counted).

GPS is an garmin dakota 20
Spot 2 and also depending on the trip will also carry a plb

So I will pretty much use any combo of the above in various setups...just depends on the trip.

Out of interest, what are the general base pack weights people are carrying?

Whats is the breakdown of
/pack. 1600. Osprey aura. Would like something lighter, but need the comfort
/shelter system. 600/1200. Tarptent stratospire, shared or alone
/sleep system. 450. Neo air trekker large torso
500. Katabatic quilt
150 silk liner
/cooking system. 200. Pot and burner
300. Bowl, cup spoon
/extra clothing (ie not that which you'd wear while walking)
850. Puffy, longs, long sleeve, beanie
/personal items (eg toiletries, first aid and repair kit etc)
250. I take too much first aid. Can't help it. Nurse.
/electricals such as phone, GPS, PLB, batteries etc
180. GPS and headlamp
120. Water containers

With maps and randomness it usually comes out at about 6 kg. closer to UL than light, but not as close as I would like!

Eta, usually weekends/ few days in SA winter

I will be doing my own in time, not that I think I will even make entry level.
Interested to learn, however.

Also interested to see whether there's a plan for equipment lists for say a (up to) 2 week walk in Tasmania, which is more my thing.

Ahh bugger !!

Now I'll have to find my list - and I'm going to lose big time !!

Something that I haven't seen mentioned is the degree to which lightening one's load enables one to do more, and to do it for longer.

Perhaps not as important to younger walkers with good knees and backs, but a few kilos less weight (and using trekking poles) can make bushwalking possible way past the point at which physical degeneration would have ended the game many years ago.

My gear is out in preparation for a walk next weekend so, spurred on by this thread, I thought I'd finally get out the kitchen scales and put everything in an excel worksheet, see how much pain I can expect it all weighs. Pretty much what I'd expect & not that bad considering the camera stuff and the amount of clothing. Normally I'd carry far less clothing (and I may this time) but it's cold out west and the same trip last year saw me freeze my bollocks off, *&%$#! that I'm going to enjoy myself this time!

Pack
OP McMillan 3000
Shelter
MLD DuoMid with mesh inner, CF pole & pegs 1250
Sleeping
Prolite plus & WM Sycamore 1600
Cooking
Fire Maple stove, 900ml pot, cup, lighter,
knife, spoon, chux 1145
Water
2 x 1L bottle & 3L Platypus 430
Clothing carried
Raincoat, fleece hoody, polypro thermals,
Lightweight pants, wool balaclava, down jkt,
boxers, socks, thinsulate gloves, thongs 3390
Camera
40D, 4 batteries + accessories & tripod 4400
Gadgets
GPS (& spare batteries), headlamp, compass,
map, phone 560
first aid/survival/hygiene/repair 500

Totals roughly 16.3kg
Normally I just take a raincoat and clean shorts/t-shirt to sleep in and 'if' I left the camera at home (mmm, no not going to happen :) ) It'd be close to 9.1kg

I suppose I should add that I plan on going for 3 nights/4 days and I expect minimum temps of zero but prepared for colder.

Good stuff guys
I can't do my list until a few weeks time, as I have just spent the last few days tidying up the spare room (otherwise known as the walking gear and clean laundry overflow storage room) in preparation The Mother's impending vsit for the next week and a half, then we're off to the Gold Coast for a conference hubby's going to. So all my gear is packed away.
I'm interested in the breakdown, as in the past I've simply weighed my whole pack once it's loaded up, water food etc, or I've just weighed individual items out of interest. It's been about 14/15kg last few trips, but that's with my bigger pack, and carrying extra clothes for my son, plus food for more than just me. I'd like to think I'd be under 9kg base weight....but that may be wishful thinking
I want to get myself organised and use a spreadsheet/software app like the one's I've found. I started to enter stuff into Gram Weenie but got distracted by someting else and never finished....

Interesting spread of weights here from others.

For me tropical / subtropical conditions (in kg):

Pack 2.18
Shelter 1.57
Sleep 1.49
Cook 0.974
Clothing 1.83 (1.37kg worn)
Electrical 0.495
Other 0.385
Safety 0.77
Navigation 0.19
Personal 0.433

Total 10.32kg (8.95kg carried). I could save a bit (e.g. I take a synmat where a bulkier ccf mat is lighter and as warm. Plus I carry a shellite stove (gas would be fine) and a ratsac (stainless mesh bag to keep anything chewable safe at night - anyone seen a tropical white-tailed rat? :) ). So could lose about 1kg with what I already have but where I choose the heavier alternative. Not much weight saved by sharing with others in a party though (the above is a solo walk list).

Add about 0.5-0.6kg/day food and 6kg water per day with no water supply (up to maximum two days from water). 6l of water per day is actually a bit hairy in some situations (need to be careful).

Cold weather (e.g. mountains with snow or snow potential).

Pack 2.22
Shelter 4.632 (#%$#off bombshelter!)
Sleep 1.69
Cook 0.995
Clothing 3.61
Electrical 0.475
Other 0.553
Safety 1.44
Navigation 0.24
Personal 0.74

Total is 16.59kg (solo weight). With savings from shared items with with walking with others that is about 11.83kg. Then minus 1.94 worn clothing / footwear and only 1kg heavier than the tropical set up  Not much more in savings for me to feel safe (i won't go away from carrying the bombshelter for example).

Add about 0.7kg /day food and usually carry no more than 2l of water at any one time (it is usually pretty abundant in Tasmania etc).

My first time down the overland track as a teenager my starting pack was weighing in around 33-34kg

So I guess I am at the lightweight end of not being lightweight?

** Forgot to add, the only significant change from overnight to about 5-6 days for me is food, fuel and maybe water (oh, and TP). Clothes and gear is the same.

So much information here, so I'll slim my post down a bit.

For a one week walk in benign conditions my base weight is 4.0 kg.
I'm kind of new to the UL game though.

Excuse the formatting as it's straight off my spreadsheet. Normally I'm around 4 - 4.5kg's baseweight. Overnighters maybe a little less but not much. Depends on my shelter too. My Hammock system is about 400g heavier than the Hexamid but much more comfortable. I'll do up a gear list with that and heaps less gear than I took to Larapinta later today.
This is from my Larapinta walk a few weeks ago and I was covered from the warm daytime temps and would have been warm at night even if it dropped to -5/-8°C (it didn't get lower than -2°C, most other nights I was too hot)
This list for me has a heap of extra's I wouldn't normally take but it's still light. Give me a break eh I had 10 days walking solo so had to talk some luxuries.......
I could make this list seem lighter but what's the point if it's actually carried anyway.
You want a list, here's a list.

This one's a UL hammock list. I've used this set-up plenty of times around and above 0°C in NSW (Normally forcasted weather above 5°C lows). But for the sake of details lets say it's my trail walking spring/summer/autumn list for an overnight walk, with rain possible, hence the eVent jacket and spare dry long sleeve shirt for camp.

I must admitt in NZ I usually end up lugging around 5-7 kgs when using the huts too. Normally too cold and wet to skimp on gear over there. Actually it's more a wet and windy thing, dry windy cold = :( , wet windy cold = or dead.
Fleece and Synthetic Jackets are your friend most of the time I find above the treeline.
Besides I can hide in my tent/hammock and shiver all night and still say I'm UL here.......
In NZ you'd just be the silly ozzy in the corner shivering next to the french backpackers....... that everyone doesn't want to make eye contact with incase they ask to borrow more gear they didn't bring.

It's a bit anal eh....

But it means I can armchair plan, then pack in about 15 minutes as all I need to do is grab the gear out as the "thought" side of the trip is done. That's my way of saying I have more time at "work" to do this stuff and less time at home with family life / house to bugger around (other than weighing things here and there  )

Hehe Forest, I bet you had fun doing all that
Very comprehensive
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

I just have one massive spreadsheet with every item of gear or stuff I might need on it. It's been about a 3 year process to get the total list done. All I do is delete the rows I don't need and leave the ones I want. Then print. Its pretty straightforward now its all there. Only takes about five minutes of deleting gear and a re save under that trip. A lot of the time I might not change a thing and just re print a previous list.

Re: What's your base pack weight?

For 3 day, 3 season trip my weights are as follows:

Base Weight 5283
Food & Water 4950
Pack Weight 10233
Clothes worn 3114
Skin Out Weight: 13347

Check out my full gear list here: http://mickbeckers.com/gear-list/

I've found this completely adequate for three seasons in lots of different terrain, from coastal walks to the Australian Alps to long off track scrub bashed through fire regrowth. This sort of gear wont suit everyone but it is perfect for me. It's not quite UL, more like LW based on how these things are being defined but who really cares - they are just labels right. UL is more of an attitude. I like Andrew Skurka's use of the term Ultimate Hiker.

Phil/Forest, great work. You've definitely set the benchmark for a full gear like. Both are nice measures for others to compare against. I'll have to work on breaking my kit down further to show all individual items instead of showing the total weight of say a first aid kit.

Average about 6-9 kg as I'm mostly a day hiker with a couple of overnighters on the Heysen trail.

Having just packed for South West Tassie, I have a base pack weight of approx 13kg before food, fuel and water. This is everything I need for all types of weather.
