Costco Down Throw Quilts

Just a query to the eastern state fraternity..

I noticed on the Reddit ultralight page, a few people are going crazy about this USD$20 packable down throws and turning them into MYOG Quilts.

Is this something that is stocked at Costco in the eastern states? I'd be keen to try converting one.

Thanks

Have not come across them in Costco's Auburn store yet. Maybe coming to downunder for the next season. I note that they now have landed their casket product line here.

These are now at Auburn Costco. $30. 152x177cm, 460grams. I grabbed some yesterday and took this photo.

Saw these in Adelaide Costco today as well for $29.90. There on a stand just inside the door as you enter....

Lots of stock at the Docklands warehouse. Grabbed a red one (though my wife has informed it's magenta). They are over near the bedding, not really where you might expect.

That is actually a reasonable price as they are $19.90- in the US at the moment. Finally a reason to get a CostCo membership
Anybody else see some MYOG project in the future?
Mine will be an underquilt for the camp bed

Might be cheaper to get someone to post you one Moondog and save yourself the membership fee! There is a good you tube video where a guy makes an underquilt out of one.

No problem. Feel free to give me a shout when you're ready. I work in Footscray so can easily nip down to Costco in my lunch break.

They are pretty fussy as their business model depends on it. The idea is that the person has a buy in or investment in the experience before they they make their first purchess

I work for a major supplier to Costco. They actually make more revenue from memberships than retail margins.

I don't doubt that given how small their margins are but the whole membership thing is about people being happy with spending money. If you sit there and watch people's faces they are happy with the money they spend at Costco. Even when their bill is a lot higher than expected. People are spending money to save money and so they want to be happy about it.

Started removing the horizontal stitching this afternoon to allow better loft, release any down trapped under the stitching and reduce sewn through cold spots. Next step will be to install a short zip to form a footbox which will be cinched using a drawcord. I will also install another drawcord at the head end.

Plan is to use this as a stand alone summer quilt, as a booster for myself over my Enlightened Rev 20F for winter use, or over kids sleeping bags if required. Keeping things simple with my first project by not reducing width or creating any taper.Image

Mine weighs 442g. Fill weight is supposedly around 200g, 700 loft duck down. Estimated standalone temperature limit approx 10°C.

What lower temperature would you use this down to Strider?

From my research over the last couple of days people in the US are pushing them down to around 10°C with a light baselayer, but they are probably a bit more cold tolerant than us here in Aus. I'll use it in summer as a standalone, or in winter to supplement my EE Rev 20F (hence keeping the standard width of 60" to fit over the EE at 54").

A short zip and drawcords top and bottom should make it quite functional. Considering also adding flat buckles to fasten down to my mat but I'll see how it all fits first.Image

Removing the secondary baffle stitching really seem to have improved the loft by quite a bit. I had not considered doing so but I may now. Was it really tedious>?

Not too tedious MD. Unpicked it all in 50mm sections. Took me 2-3 hours I guess. The hardest part was deciding whether to keep vertical or horizontal channels!

I've seen videos on Youtube where guys have unpicked whole square lengths at a time but mine seemed to have too much stitch tension to do that much.
