A place to chat about gear and the philosphy of ultralight. Ultralight bushwalking or backpacking focuses on carrying the lightest and simplest kit. There is still a good focus on safety and skill.

Forum rules

Ultralight Bushwalking/backpacking is about more than just gear lists. Ultralight walkers carefully consider gear based on the environment they are entering, the weather forecast, their own skill, other people in the group. Gear and systems are tested and tweaked.
If you are new to this area then welcome - Please remember that although the same ultralight philosophy can be used in all environments that the specific gear and skill required will vary greatly. It is very dangerous to assume that you can just copy someone else's gear list, but you are encouraged to ask questions, learn and start reducing the pack weight and enjoying the freedom that comes.

Too funny - UL grater

Thu 16 Aug, 2018 5:24 pm

Had to post this for a bit off a laugh.

I read about this in a hiker’s blog somewhere... Aliexpress mini cheese grater. It’s between 10 and 11 grams (my scale was wavering between the two).

It may go with me for grating Parmesan into my angel hair pasta, and for amusement value of fellow hikers.

Will test it out tonight.

I've got a couple of these and another type too. Works fine for me.

UL .. grate it before you go (or buy it already grated and save some skin). Saves 10 g by not taking it.

you could drill some holes in the handle to... shave some weight.

We use them on beetroot, cheese, carrot, the fresh veg is .. great a few days in & pre-grated cheese sticks together, the bought stuff has a non-sticky agent.

I was shocked to find our little flat GSI graters are 40 g's.. it appears this square one is indeed the lesser grater.

I reckon youd save more weight by leaving the scales at home, personally.

Real bushwalkers grate their cheese with the tips of their tent pegs.

In the UL world , the smaller grater is the greater grater.

Pull your bottom lip back and just use your teeth. Worn weight?

Good for dealing with garlic cloves too.
