41 in Melbourne today. I hope the cool weather across the ditch hangs around for my trip there in a few weeks time.

I've just completed my 12 days tour of the South Island (CC, Arthur's Pass, West Coast, Mt Cook, Otago, Catlins, Fiordland, Queenstown). Unfortunately we had only 2 days of fine weather, and we caught the worst of it at Mount Cook and Mount Aspiring. I did Rob Roy glacier and the Ball Flat route under heavy rain, and we couldn't do Hooker Valley it was so clouded in. But at least I had perfect weather doing the Remarkables, and it wasn't too bad in the Fiordland (couldn't do Gertrude valley though, the river was so swollen you had to cross it twice waist-high).

when i was on the kepler at new years. a no of people panicked, they were on the ridge top in strong cold wind and heavy rain, they were worried about hypothermia getting them and abandoned their packs and raced down to the hut in the valley for the night.... the following day they returned up the ridge to reclaim their packs...
one person did get hypothermia and had to get carried to the Iris Burn ridge top shelter. they were flown out by helicopter the next day
from the land of the long white clouds...
