Hollyford Track

Sat 02 Aug, 2014 2:22 pm

I'm making tentative plans for myself and the boy to walk the Hollyford Track/Pyke River Route in mid November. I've done some tramping in NZ before and am planning on allowing 7 days/6 nights for the Pyke/Hollyford circuit, with a couple of extra days for unforseen events. I've read the DOC info and found a (very) few trip reports, however does anyone have any personal experience or information?

Cheers

Lindsay

pay attention to DOC alerts, it will tell you anything out of the ordinary going on, on the track. I spoke to someone who went through after a major storm and his legs were covered in scratches negotiating all the windfall on the track.. november is usually still pretty stormy. and can be cold to the point of snow falling on the mountains...
otherwise expect west coast weather... rain in biblical proportions... the pike can be a bit rough in places but normally not a difficult track...

Funny you ask. I just finished uploading my tramping journal (from 5years ago). We only did the Hollyford Track though - but feel free to have a read. We went at Christmas time and the weather was perfect (hot and cold but never too much of anything).

We did three walks in that holiday and the Hollyford Track was the highlight.

In a fit of nostalgia today I was looking for some blogs and found one that might be of interest.

Thanks for the info team. I'm still in the planning stages, and unless I can get time off it won't happen but it looks an interesting walk and something I'm keen to do, if only to ride that flying fox across the river!

The trip is booked. :D. Happening in mid November. The only issue now is an achilles tendon injury, coupled with plantar fasciitis that has kept me off serious walking for a couple of months. Treatment seems to have worked well and I should be getting some decent daywalks in over the next week or two and be good to go by November.
