Easter 2017 options!?

Postby Dutchy » Mon 06 Feb, 2017 8:19 pm

Hi all,
I'm thinking of a trip to NZ again, South Island. I've done a summer trip years ago and did the Rees - Dart plus some "regular" travelling....
This time it'll be the last 2 weeks of April....
I've got 12 days which at this stage includes getting there and back...There is a lot of info on NZ, but lots of opinions too.

Anyone with NZ experience around April have any tips on what tracks to look into? Ideally I'd like some not too far apart, to reduce the amount of travelling between walks.

As I'll most likely be going solo, very remote stuff is probably not advisable...

Thanks!

Some years ago I did the Abel Tasman (via kayak rather than walking) and the Heaphy track. They are reasonably close to each other (top of the south island) and took me 3 days and 5 days respectively. This would probably fit into your 12 day time frame as long as you fly into Nelson (I assume via Wellington).

Both walks were done in March and the weather was (mostly) excellent. Not sure how it would be in late April though but it may be something to consider ...

The Gillespie is terrific but if the weather's good I reckon there'll be a few trampers heading through the Young, Siberia and Wilkin as well.
I think the secret is to try to get into some of the side valleys of the big walks.
