For anyone wanting a side trip off the Routeburn, I can highly recommend Lake Wilson.
You access it by exiting the Routeburn above Lake Harris, heading around the western shore of Harris to the far end and then into the Valley of the Trolls.
At the end of the valley you climb up a gut next to a waterfall for roughly 200 metres vertical.
Care is needed on slippery snow grass but the end result is fabulous.

Very squelchy under foot as well.

Did this trip in 2010. Spent 2 days in the "Valley of the Trolls", aptly named. We actually continued up to the head of the valley where you end up much higher then Lake Wilson, probably around the same height as Conical Hill. You can see Conical Hill in the pics, behind the lake.
