and theres the problem, lower than ruapehu crater lake. people think how hard can it be,.... the clearer the weather at this time of year the harder the ice freezes everything... and thats the weather people go up. at this time of year its for experienced mountaineers only...
you cant use an ice axe to self arrest when you've got a snow pole in the other hand, either have two ice axes and walk straight up with crampons, or one ice axe and zig zag sawpping the ice axe to the uphill side, ready to self arrest at any time, but you must practice somewhere safe with experienced instructors and go up with someone experienced
