In NZ huts do I need to take precautions against animals chewing through packs/food bags?

In Aus mountain huts are well known for resident night time vistors..

Yep. They have little rodents, and outside there are possums, wekas and kias, depending on where you are.

The short answer is no. The longer answer is ....

Really, it depends on where you are. All Great Walk huts and most 'mainstream' huts are vermin proof but biv's, especially, are frequently not. There is no comparison between our high plains huts and the Kiwi ones.

As for Kea, they are just cheeky, intelligent, fun-loving, teenage terrorists

depends on the hut design, the older smaller tin forestry huts are prone to having rodents get into them. look around in the hut for rodent droppings.
