Recently did Rumpf Saddle to the Viking.
Found Mt Speculation well signed (and what great hiking and climbing). Signage good from Catherine Saddle right along the trail over Mt Despair. From the base off Mt Despair, very trail markers at first, then as you proceed towards the Viking weaving in and out up and down a rocky way markers are more prevalent. thank god!
If you get hike around this spot and find a Garmin GPS let me know and collect a reward.
On the approach to the Viking Saddle the trail marking is excellent, right up to the notorious rock chimney BYO rope.
After getting to Viking your are on your own no markers and very difficult track locating. It caused me to become exhausted and a rescue.

Good hiking

Ummmm, granted it's been a year since I was there, but there are markers on the route west off the Viking. The route is neither always obvious nor instinctive, but it is mostly marked. The only section where more markers are needed are on the westernmost slope, with that steep climb over disturbed open ground, and to keep people away from the easily mistaken too-early descent.

Hey rocketrm that gps wouldn't be an etrext would it. I found two of them on my trip around, if so what batteries are in it. I think it's yours, I'll look for where rumpf sale is. One gps has a way point on the Jamieson licola Rd on the aawt and more all the way to where I picked it up

I am a lone, older, female walker and have walked AAWT in both directions. In 2008 I could not find route east off Viking. Spent a night on a tiny ledge. Luckily found water. Finally I returned to Viking saddle and walked down East buffalo river to track and up disused track to Barry saddle. Since then, track had been marked. In nov/dec 13 I found all the AAWT easy to track and negotiate. With coming off the Viking, ad you start to descend, you clamber over a rocky ledge. From above it looks impossible and not obvious. The markets are there. It is a long drop 600 m+. Good luck to those lucky persons with the time to go there.
