food drop retrieval needed

Postby trekkingalways » Mon 11 Jan, 2016 8:13 pm

After an injury in the Viking Razor Wilderness I needed to abandon my attempt on the AAWT. There are now 8 food/supply drops left in the bush which I will not be able to retrieve as I am returning to Canada. Included is more than enough food for 2 people, maps, shellite, snacks ... I am not interested in reacquiring the supplies I simply want them out of the bush and, hopefully, made useful to someone. The caches are located at Hotham, Sunnyside-Omeo Hwy, Benambra Hwy, Cowambat Flat, Dead Horse Gap, Guthega, Kiandra, near Blue Waterholes. They are well hidden but I can give directions to each cache and with some searching I expect they can be found. I would like to give directions to only one person for each cache so there is not a dissappointing duplication of efforts. Please be serious about retrieving the cache(s) if you request directions. If this is something you are interested in pursuing please let me know. I will not have regular access to internet in the next while so please be patient with my possibly slow response.

It appears you have not had any (public forum) responses to this. Unfortunately this posted a week after I was up collecting my own caches so I could have snared the Hotham and Benambra ones for you.

Lets keep this live and current until all are recovered otherwise its just litter in the bush (and maybe ignition sources?).

Can you confirm if you have received any response to date.

I know of other recent AAWTer's who are heading up pretty soon on recovery missions.

I'll be up that way in 3 weeks and would be happy to collect the DHG, Kiandra and Blue Waterholes drops.

I will be heading to Hotham at some stage, before the end of February.
Happy to collect the cache if it has not been collected by then.

Can I suggest you update on this thread with what has been arranged to save doubling up of responses

Cheers,

Terrific take-up from our fabulous forum members - well done. On my reconciliation of above that accounts for 5 out of the 8; leaving the caches yet to be nominated for collection being at Cowombat Flat, Benambra/Corryong Rd and Guthega.

JoBell I think you might be heading to the Benambra /Corryong spot for your recovery (?) so that then would just leave two.

Guthega and Cowombat Flat looking for favours.

cheers

Hi. This is a long shot but if you need me to collect, I can.

I won't be doing the walk until the end of this year. But it would help me a great deal if i didn't have to organise a food drop or two or three as i don't have transport to make my own and will be posting my food drops from Canberra. And of course walking to wherever i have to in order to collect them.

So if you think the food will keep that long and be safe that long, then you can consider me. If you want them rid of much sooner, then don't worry about it. Let someone else have it.

Hello.

I'm probably going to hitch to Omeo but thought I would ask here if anyone is going to the Omeo Hwy area for a food drop between now and mid-March who consider doing a food drop for me?

A long shot I know, but worth asking, I suppose.

Cheers

Thank you everyone for your generous responses and I apologize for not replying sooner. A special thank you to scoha for keeping us on track.
I have sent personal messages on this site to GBW, WAZZA, gmac and jobell hoping that they can pick up some of these abandoned food drops. Please be sure to check your messages.
As scoha points out, even if all the members above retrieve expected caches, cowombat flats and guthega caches still will need retrieval. If anyone can assist me and the wilderness by retrieving these caches it would be much appreciated!

Hmm, I have not seen a PM.
I wonder if it was sent to the wrong Wazza?

I got one Wazza, with some instructions, but I've asked for a bit more info on the locations and haven't heard back yet. I'm a definite to grab the 3 drops in 10 days provided I can find them.

Hi, I'll be in at Cowombat in a couple of weekends and at Guthega this weekend if you want me to collect the caches. PM me as I cannot do so yet.

UPDATE: I have now given out instructions to members for finding all of my abandoned food caches. Many thanks to all the members who are cooperating in retrieving these supplies from the bush.

I had success with the food drops at Kiandra and Blue Waterholes but couldn't find the DHG drop.

Benambra-Corryong Rd drop retrieved today [WHITE SMILING FACE]along with two others. One plastic tub used post mid Dec 2015 (I remember it still being intact then) with no identifiers on it otherwise and two 15-20 litre paint tins very rusty used prior to mid Dec 2015 belonging to Phoebe and Annie. Any help in identifying their owners would be great so they know they have been collected.

Well done, jobell! This is my final cache that needed retrieval. Thank you everyone for your efforts! I hope to make it back to Australia one day to complete the beautiful AAWT. To be clear: ALL FOOD DROPS HAVE NOW BEEN RETRIEVED.
