AAWT Seasonal Road Closures

Postby YowieDude » Sun 04 Sep, 2016 8:57 pm

A mate and I are walking the AAWT in November/December 2016. We are planning on placing food drops in the first few days of October 2016 but I am concerned about seasonal road closure blocking our 4WD access. If anyone would happen to know how which roads are closed at this time or provide a link for me to investigate, it would be greatly appreciated.

Drops are as follows:
1. Junction between Thomson Jordan Divide road and Park Road (-37.699857, 146.255099)
2. Low Saddle Road (-37.3338, 146.4426)
3. East Buffalo/Riley Road  (-37.075232, 146.830024)
4. Tablelands Road (-36.826097, 147.660602)
5. Mt Hope Road (-36.731999, 147.942318)
6. Happy Jacks Road (-36.049254, 148.534494)

YowieDude, welcome to the forum. I cannot locate a PV website with the 2016 closures, but this may assist

Most closed tracks are closed until the Thursday before Cup Day. It would assist if you gave grid references. There's quite a lot of good informatoin in the AAWT area.

Your drop on Happy Jacks Road is only possible if you plan to walk or cycle to place the drop. Vehicle access is not allowed. If you plan to drive to a drop site then you need to place the drop at Kiandra - year round sealed road access. If you plan to walk/cycle in a drop then there are are other shorter options than Happy Jacks Road.

I assume Mt Hope Rd is the one giving access to Buenba and Buckwong. That's never been gated in my experience. Gives the option of drops either at theBuckwong Rd gate or at Buenba Flats.
Tablelands is a public road, open all year round (the local farmers would be very unhappy otherwise).
TJ/Park Rd junction might be a problem - I'm fairly sure that at least some of the roads there are closed until the standard Cup Weekend opening, and some beyond that.
Low Saddle was never gated until near Mt Sunday, but take a chainsaw because it gets very little use during winter and there's a high likelihood of treefalls.
East Buffalo/Riley I don't recall gates . . . hmmm, not until beyond the junction. You should also be able to get in to the other end of the Barries via Selwyn Creek Rd.
Happy Jacks is not a good choice as it's an MVO. You're better off making drops at Kiandra and Dead Horse Gap.
