Food drop between low saddle and Hotham?

Postby AWTtrekker » Wed 03 May, 2017 11:02 pm

Has anyone worked out the easiest location(or if it is possible) to break up the food drops here? We need to do our drops in October which complicates things a little as the seasonal road closures will still be in place. I can deal with a short walk in if necessary but would prefer as minimal as possible. We have an SUV that we bash and trash but not a serious 4WD. We are going at a slightly more relaxed pace which does make things difficult in this section as it pushes us out to around 12 days here which starts to become a little more cumbersome for carrying food

The right food (even cheese) in a properly sealed drum will last over winter without any problem so consider placing them before the roads are closed.

I am planning to do Hotham - Walhalla in October/early November this year to complete the AAWT and am preparing to put drops in at Macalister Springs, Rumpff Saddle and Mt Victor or Stronachs in the next few weeks.

East Riley Rd or Selwyn. Can't remember whether there are gates there. Closest access otherwise would involve an awkward amount of walking - Brocks, Refrigerator Gap, Speculation.

2017 road closures haven't been published yet, but 2016 closures can be found at http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/safety/closures/seasonal-road-closures2 Map 35D suggests that access may be possible at the places you mention.

Years ago we did the Walhalla to Hotham bit, but just took 12 days' food, so didn't have any food drop - had one at Hotham General Store, as we were planning to continue, but didn't. Wouldn't one near Mt Speculation break things up nicely? That was sort of half wayish, wasn't it?

Mt Skene/Rumpff Saddle is probably closest to halfway between Walhalla and Hotham.

In terms of 2WD winter accessible, Mt Victor/Fiddlers Green is probably the closest option.

After some discussion we have decided that we will likely put in at least this drop pre-winter. We are leaving a drop at Hotham and Thredbo as we are going to stay in accomodation at both for a night
