Thredbo and Mt Hotham food drop and accomodation

Postby Daveisbludging » Thu 17 Aug, 2017 8:06 pm

Any suggestions on accommodation which will store food drops in Mt Hotham and Thredbo in late November and December?

I won't be able to commit to definite dates so would like some flexibility.

Cheers

There's a Post Office at Thredbo, but you need to get there during their opening hours. The Youth Hostel may be able to take your food drop if you make a booking before sending it, perhaps pay for an approximate date. This should be okay as there's often vacancies. There should be vacancies at Hotham; the problem is finding places that are open outside winter.

Before School holidays, I'd just show up at Thredbo and ask around. I'd book a room at the Alpine Hotel. The Denman is supposed to be OK cheaper accom. The supermarket is about the size of your average IGA, so you could pickup supplies there if you are OK without dehydrated meals.

'The General' at Mt Hotham has apartments, restaurant, a small supermarket and is also the post office! So, yes, they will hold parcels (whether you stay their or not). I am sending myself a parcel and overnighting there in October (they are open year round). You can change your booking date if delayed on hike due to weather or whatever. The supermarket has metho (fuel) but call to secure stock. $220/night for a one bed studio in low season (nothing's cheap in the alps!). Jenna is the name of the accommodation manager. Send parcel well in advance as apparently deliveries are only twice a week, Their address for parcels:

The YHA at Thredbo is very accomodating (sorry) of walkers. Cheap, flexible with timings, and will happily hold a package for you. Agree that many items are available at the supermarket, so just need to send any speciality items, fuel, etc.

While some food may be bought from the resort stores, the vast majority of food should be prepared at home. The reasons are that there is no guarantee that what you want will be available, if it is available it will most probably be in the wrong quantity, the packaging may be unsuitable, and it will not be practical to measure food into meal or day units at the accommodation. For about $30 postage, food for 10-15 days can be posted to the resort, and this is what I suggest. The store can be used to buy a few treats. The cost of items at the stores is 20-40% higher than in cities, and this is also a factor.

Some feedback that the YHA at Hotham was less than helpful about holding a food drop for us. In the end we gave up and arranged for a family member to meet us there.

Food drops accepted at Glen Wills retreat if you stay there. Only a couple of km's off the track. It is about 3 days walk from Hotham though. You can post them or drop them off. Budget prices for AAWT'ers and a lift back up the hill when you leave.

The General Store at Hotham, 2.3km down the road from the Mt Loch carpark was very helpful and happy to store food drops. Also very convenient for a cleansing ale, if needed. I suspect they would be happy to accept parcels by post too (probably worth a call to check) to avoid the drive. At about $15 postage from memory, the fuel cost alone would be much more.

The Denman at Thredbo were quite happy to accept a food drop container without a firm booking. They said they had one already. They also mentioned accommodation may be tight on the first weekend in December due to a cycling event called Le Trek.
