Eldon Range

Postby Markus » Thu 03 Mar, 2016 5:47 pm

G'day, just thought I would share a few pictures from a recent trip into the Eldons. The walk was 12 days from the Hwy at Lake Burbury to Lake St Clair, including a few tent days due to the recent weather.
Cheers
Markus

Wow! Gorgeous shots, Marcus. They almost put the Eldons onto my bucket list - but then I remember the many stories.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the comments, and yes it is an amazing place that I will definitely be returning to at some point. Hi Dan, sorry but I'm not much of a blogger really, I'll try and put together a bit of a trip summary though.

A GPS track log? Or even a hand drawn track would be interesting, to roughly know the route you took and relate them to the photos.

fantastic photos Markus. I love the sunrise one especially, but they are all good.
And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended,
And at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars.

Beautiful photos, especially the morning reflection at Lake Ewart. Good to see the smoke had cleared from the area during your trip.

Here is a bit of a trip summary:
Day1: late start, left the Hwy from the lake Burbury camping grounds around 3pm and walked the lake edge until Bull Rivulet before climbing up over the ridge and back down to the lake. 5.7km

Day2: continued along the lake and up to the confluence of the Eldon and South Eldon rivers. Rest of the day was spent hauling up the ridge towards Eldon Peak. Got to about 1100m just below the scree before setting up camp. Weather to date had been showers and plenty of low cloud, no views of the range yet. 14.5km

Day3: woke to heavy cloud and walked up onto Eldon Peak in the mist, walking off Eldon Peak towards the range the rain started increasing so we stupid camp at about 10am to sit it out. Only 2.3km

Day4: woke to a clear day and got going onto the range just on sunrise. Traversed the range and got to the take-off point for Eldon Crag and stop camp with enough time to dry out gear from the day before. Water along the range was no issue given the recent rain. 10km

Day5: had intended to do Eldon Crag and Bluff today, however due to rain overnight and heavy mist in the morning we decided to skip Eldon Crag and focus on Eldon Bluff before heading to Lake Ewart. 9.1km

Day6: continued on from Lake Ewart and onto the ridge to the southeast. Dropped packs and did a side trip up Castle Mtn. Walked out tithe ridgeline west of High Dome, with weather coming in during the evening. 11.8km

Day7: climbed High Dome in the mist and set off for Five Duck Tarn just as the rain started. It rained consistently down to Five Duck Tarn. It started raining heavily just as we got into the saddle at the head waters of the South Eldon river. Continued up towards Junction Hill, and decided to stop camp on the first shelf out of the heavy scrub as it was still pouring. 13km

Day8: into the soaked gear and pushed on to Junction Hill. Still drizzling with a moderate wind made for uncomfortable walking, so we stupid camp early Northwest of Pyramid Mtn. Rain continued for the rest of the day. 5.2km

Day9: still intermittent showers with heavy mist and with all wet gear we decided to stay and attempt to dry some stuff out. Spent the rest other day putting clothes out only to bring them in 5Min later as the next shower passed. I think the gear was probably wetter by the end of he day than at the start. 0km

Day10: very windy and raining overnight, again pushing on in these conditions with wet gear was not going to be fun. We had plenty of food and had rationed well so these tent days were no issue. By midday a small windows had allowed us to semi-dry some of the lighter gear and rather than sit in the tent we decided to move camp towards Pyramid Mtn. Spent a very windy and wet night on Pyramid Mtn. 2km

Day11: still drizzling and misty, packed up and commenced the walk out to the Little Suggarloaf ridge. Walked up Little Suggarloaf and Gould's Suggarloaf. Low cloud had come back in. Stupid camp on Coal Hill. 10.1km

Day12: drizzling overnight and during the morning, packed up and pushed down from Coal Hill to Lake Petrarch, then continued down the Cuvier Valley to Cynthia Bay. 21.5km

Anyway that's about it I think. More than happy to answer any questions about the trip/routes etc if anyone has any.

Cheers

Sometimes it seems that Huey takes it as a personal challenge if you allow plenty of days for a walk i.e. the more days you allow, the more miserable the weather ends up being

You may not have had much good weather, but you got some marvellous photos. I'm particularly envious of the clear skies on Eldon Peak . . . :x

Thanks for posting.

Do Eldon Peak as an overnight up and down, then the rest via PigeonHouse Hill. There are ways to make it easier
