Hmmm got any C4 Dan???
I agree. It would have been a fantastic place to lay eyes on after several days walking.

Franks dont need a road Oll, Good access already from either end, and very easy walking (for off-track)

And some that hate the new lake on principle. I think the new lake is beautiful in its own right, but I agree with Dan about the sadness/eeriness to the feel of it - I think for me it is partly because it is so empty. It's the most beautiful, spectacular place, yet it just isn't appreciated or visited by many and it's so lonely. There is also the sadness about losing the original, I've always regretted being too young to have seen it, although would that have made it worse? I've watched the destruction of other wild places in Tassie. What's worse is that I read that they could have put in a canal through the hills instead of flooding the lake.

Hi All,
Some of you may remember Short's Service Station, the Ampol on Davey St Hobart. Anyway When my grandfather and uncle were not running that, they (and the family) were keen bushwalkers. I'm recently become one of the family custodians of all the photos :)

I've put together all the Lake Pedder ones I could find. And put them in an album for your enjoyment.

You know I do. It's beautiful, and functional. I also think we need more dams and more hydro. :

Maybe a morbid request but does anyone have any pictures (or links) of when the crime actually took place. There are lots of pictures of before and after but I haven't seen anything from during the construction and flooding. Too heartbreaking to witness or restricted access?

Ian R put some great pics of the construction on here... I have a book called SOUTHWEST TASMANIA, A LAND OF THE WILD. By D.Nielson that has an AMAZING (but very sad) section on just this Stibb! See if you can track it down. If not PM me and I will meet you somewhere so you can borrow if you like :)

Thanks for the offer :D I might take it up. I'll get back to you on that.

I just found a couple of Ian's construction pics (have you got more?). It's so terribly sad
A real treat to read about and see some old pics from you guys who has experienced Pedder in its glory. THANKS

This is all fairly new to me as I didn't really know about any of this until not long ago. I've heard about it but didn't realized the scale and significance. I was too young to have heard anything about it when it actually happen but I remember I've seen some later protests in wet and muddy forests on the news back home in Sweden which was probably about the Franklin dam.

When I have finished building my time machine, the first place I am going is to Pedder.

Does anyone know where I can find a DeLorean dealership?

Not seen any, but if that interests you, the Franklin blockade has a fair bit on Youtube, there are some links under the photo in this post.
That wilderness society link is quite compelling reading too.

Check out the book Tasmanian Wilderness Battles by Greg Buckman. Not only is it a fantastic read, it had a few pictures from Franklin and Pedder in there, plus the maps of what the region would have looked like if the Franklin went ahead.

Thanks for all these amazing photos.
New Pedder is undoubtedly spectacular but the original was an amazing and unique place. Man trying to "improve" on nature never works out well.

Anyone know if there are any (prefferably detailed) maps of the old pedder and surrounds online? I would also be interested to see one of the destruction the gordon below franklin would have caused. Is the first image on page 1 taken from termianal peak?

It was taken from the high point labeled "748" on the ridge running from the North East of Terminal Peak.

Not that far to the NE. Here's part of the 1:25,000 topo map with the photo location marked.

Looking for a map showing the location of the original Lake Pedder, I came across these articles that are worth having as referenced in this thread -

Here is a composite map I put together that shows the original lake outline relative to the new lake shoreline and surrounding features.

The new Lake Pedder may not be horrible but Lake Gordon looks awful.

I think we ruined the possibility to have truly one of the planets wildest corners that could rival just about anywhere.

As it is 40 years since I walked into Lake Pedder on December 15-17th 1971, I thought I would mark the occasion by scanning and sharing the rest of the Agfa CT18 slides I took over three days at Lake Pedder. I have just finished reading "Pedder Dreaming" and was interested to find out that Olegas Truchanas and his family walked in to Lake Pedder only a few days later to spend Christmas together there before Olegas drowned on Jan 6th 1972.
