- We line up at one of the construction workers' loos at Scotts Peak Dam site
- We had to fit our spare as a front tyre had been let down by having its valve removed.

Great set of photos. I enjoyed looking through them. Thanks for putting them on the forum.

Thanks tas-man. That's a fantastic set of images. Beautiful as well as tragic.
It think that's the only photo I've ever seen of the original Lake Pedder, as well as the waters of the new lake building up behind the new dam.

Yes, nice one Ian. It's all been said and thought abt the dam but i also just like the old photo's, brings back memories from a 'daggier' age

Funny, I don't remember the track being that muddy.

When did you walk into Lake Pedder,
N-N-W? Do you have any photos?

Lord, no, that was pre-camera days. I was still in high school. I could work out the exact dates, but it's not really worth the trouble. Roughly 40 years ago. 41 years probably, given my current age.
And we didn't go in from Scotts Peak, but from the Strathgordon Rd. Made it more fun.
Apart from the lake itself (which was a thing of beauty in SO many ways), what I remember most was the sweat and the mosquitoes.

Just a little tacker then? That's not you on Bob's shoulders is it? Even in a bygone era your mother should have warned you about strange men in underpants?

I would love to know what Bruce was thinking as he looked on

No, she didn't need to. I'd worked that out for myself by then.
I would have been thirteen and yes, still a 'little' tacker. But I didn't need to be carried anywhere. Hell, I outwalked most of 'em, even the teachers. Bunch of wimps.

I was still pre teen when this all happened.
Great pics, I think I recognize a Flinders Ranges H frame pack in there. Had one of those. Those tents bring back some memories

Some of you may remember Short's Service Station, the Ampol on Davey St Hobart. Anyway When my grandfather and uncle were not running that, they (and the family) were keen bushwalkers. I'm recently become one of the family custodians of all the photos
I've put together all the Lake Pedder ones I could find. And put them in an album for your enjoyment.

Hi Ben, the link to your album is dead, so wondering if you would like to post your collection of photos direct to this thread so they are permanently available.

I have found a few more slides I took of that trip to Lake Pedder and have scanned them to add to this thread. They may not be speccy photography but are still a record of what once was.

- Hydro "Bushwalkers" sign at Scotts Peak dam site 1971

Here's a little piece of history - my Hydro $1.00 Permit to use their private Gordon River Road to access Lake Pedder from Scotts Peak Dam. Of particular interest in the conditions of entry are the statement in the first paragraph
"The Hydro-Electric Commission has been charged with the responsibility of protecting the fauna and flora of the area from users of the area . . ." and under "Wildlife and Vegetation" on Page 2 -
"Removal of or damage to vegetation is prohibited." (but dam building is exempt!)

Nice bit of history. I like the permit!

The latest higher resolution updates to Google Earth's satellite photos south of Lake Pedder has revealed a portion of the track from Scotts Peak to the original Lake Pedder is still visible after no traffic for forty years. So it would seem that without active intervention to rehabilitate disturbed areas, human impact is going to take a long time to be erased by natural re-vegetation.

Well spotted tas-man. That's a very interesting project - to watch rehabilitation for that bit of track which is very unlikely to be used again.

Thanks for taking the time tas-man to share that latest round of pics and the hydro permit etc. Although I now have a sense of heaviness and sadness whilst sitting here at my computer (yeah thanks for that
) I really appreciate being able to 'experience' what this unique landscape once offered.

I too have found this fascinating.
During my Uni of Melb days in the 70's some of my mates came down to do some of this walking. I could not come and have been annoyed with myself ever since.
Thanks Tasman for giving us all real insight into different days.
Cheers
