Anyone know anyhting about a secret hut about ten minutes off the track from the Mt. Montagu and Montagu Thumbs Saddle?
Its described on this website http://www.kosciuszkohuts.org.au/Hut%20 ... orris.html.

I've been to Norris / Thurston hut before, nothing special.

There are a few ways to approach this (such as via Thark Ridge or via Wellington Falls from Milles or Pipeline tracks), however, my suggestion would be to do the Cathedral Rock / Mt Montague / Wellington Falls circuit (a great full day walk taking 6 - 8 hours which I have done many times).

I was there last month. Came up from Mountain River side but you have to go through private property that way so the Thark or Cathedral or Wellington Falls approach is best. You can go to Cathedral from Betts Rd which saves walking along the Pipeline Track. After descending the Montagu Thumbs a junction with the old Montagu fire trail is met. The hut is south down this a short distance and you will know you have reached it when the track changes from being overgrown to quite wide and clear. The hut is close by on the left.

It would appear that the builders or friends use a vehicle to get there and the log book bears that out. According to the log the hut was built in October 1991.

I would rather sleep in a tent outside unless the weather was bad. I would describe this as a "cubby house" with a wood fire rather than what we would commonly refer to as a "hut".

The map ref is pretty accurate. You can always pull the lng/lat from gmaps or something and use an online lat lng to utm converter.

There are other "secret huts" on Mt Wellington which I would love to find (as I have a thing for huts) but I have no idea where they are:

Apparently, somewhere on Thark Ridge, there are remains of an old hut as well, however, I have not found it as yet.

I'm currently IN wrest point tower. I should look out the window and see if I can spot the hut! ;-)
