Naked Bush Walkers? In Tasmania?

Postby Son of a Beach » Tue 27 Mar, 2007 1:31 pm

I was just doing some more searching for bushwalking resources on the WWW and found this site on Bare Bushwalking Tasmania (as part of a national nude bushwalking site).

Cracked me up. Anyone ever tried this?

That's gotta be chilly... !

Perhaps this link should be moved to the "Other Web Resources" page...

Perhaps not :?

"Just happened by", eh? Yeah yeah, whatever.......

Well, let's see.

A google quickly finds (hang on... a disclaimer, don't click if you're not interested OK? Probably don't read on, either...) this link, which has a number of links, the first being the bare bushwalking site... But their link is also the geocities one, which as you correctly point out, is a dead link.
Well, it's dead at the moment, but there are a heap of references to it in google so I got to thinking - I searched for "bare buskwalking -geocities" to see if I could find their site in case they had moved.

I didn't find them.

But

I did find a site with all these headings and more......
(I don't want to link it - most of it is not appropriate for here. Amazing what they get up to when they're not out there walking...)

Nude Boating

Haven't walked naked, and I don't think I would in Tassie, but the way it has been the last few days it is tempting. :o I suppose it would be the ultimate in being one with nature :)

I can't see this taking off in Tasmania ...

http://bigpondnews.com/articles/OddSpot/2009/04/27/Switzerland_bans_nude_hiking_325978.html

The cantonal government recommended the ban after citizens objected to encountering walkers wearing nothing but hiking boots and socks ... German websites promoting the activity describe it as 'a special experience of nature, free and healthy' and said nude walking in the Alps has roots in antiquity.

Hmmm ... I personally can't imagine toiling up Marions in nowt but me boots  Not such a good look for a bloke when a cold southerly is blowing

When I was growing up in the NW of WA, we used to do a fair amount of time "out bush" - my parents had done a lot of time on cattle stations in the 60's and maintained all their old contacts (and a lot of new ones too). We also did a bit of prospecting amongst other things. As soon as we were out of coo-ee from the main drag, and the chance of running into anyone became minimal - everything bar hat and shoes usually came off. I even have photos of my dad oxy welding with just his boots and a mask on :D (the sparks would probably make all you fellas cringe!!)
** I'd post a photo - but I wouldn't want to give you all the heebie jeebies (or get moderated for inappropriate content!)

We once spent a month rained in on a station after having gone there to take a friends light aircraft away from the anticipated path of a cyclone. (Turns out the eye passed right over the top of us out on the edge of the desert!) I don't think we spent a day clothed, although I did make myself a lap-lap as a novelty (I was only a kid). When my dad retired he spent the wet season caretaking up on a station in the Kimberley. I know he only put shorts on as a courtesy when the mail plane came once a week. He looked like a Kalahari Bushman when he came home (he had removed most of his body hair because the cane grass seeds used to get caught in it and burrow into his skin). We made fun of him a LOT for that (but carefully, and from a running distance  ).

Running through spinifex or pandanus with no kit on can be a bit dodgy.
March flies and mozzies have a field day - after reading the posts about leeches that have been put up on the forum recently  I shudder to think what a day of nude bushwalking in Tassie might yield (deet or no deet)...
Running into strangers unexpectedly can also be a bit.... um... awkward, to say the least.
It also pays to REALLY check what you're sitting on..

I doubt that the Tasmanian climate is likely to inspire similar activities. Seems just a tad chilly (and then theres that LEECH thing, as previously mentioned... dear god, the LEECHES).
If my old man was still around though, I have a sneaking suspicion he'd give it a try. :D

We've done a bit of skinny-dipping at places like Lee's Paddock (which is not for the faint-hearted, even in summer!), followed by a bit "air drying", I guess you would call it.

Our boys were horrified when another group of walkers showed up not 5 minutes after we'd re-dressed.

One friend has the habit of always taking a skinny dip on every bushwalking trip. Regardless of the weather and the location. The last one I witnessed was in an icy cold unnamed tarn just past Lake Price on the Arm River track. At least that was a sunny day, but I was not even remotely tempted to follow suit.

I did come across a group of Swedish backpackers splashing around in their birthday suits at Lake Dobson years ago. They'd just finished the Tarn Shelf circuit and needed a wash I guess :D Who was I to argue?

im a bit notorious for getting my kit off. not just out bush either.

have been nude in a pub (the bucks party in the adjacent room had no stripper, i felt i should oblige...), have been nude infront of about 2000 18-26 year olds at a rover event, have been nude in each sea/ocean/straight that surrounds this island of ours, have sat around a campfire nude (be careful putting those logs on, the sparks go everywhere...), have been nude in melbourne airport... that one got a few strange looks... but i got $50!

im definatly a fan of nudity.

This topic always had the potential to head west (or south?). I guess I should be relieved that it's taken so long to start heading in that direction. :-)

The joy of being nude. Its a shame we live in a society where its not only frowned upon but illegal...
I started going nude during the summer at the dam up the paddock as a young fella. Freedom.

When dinghy driving for a crayfish diver up capeyork inner reef, as soon as he was over the side off the gear would come...glorious to be nude up their. Still enjoy going nude out bush if the weather/privacy prevails.
Had a nice qigong session not long ago nude in the bush.

Tis a glorious feeling being nude outside.

Earthling ,
Do tell what is a "nice gigong" and why is it glorious to be nude outside ? keeps your BP weight down but I dont really understand the need to go nude especially if your body is like mine old hairy and wrinkly and fortunately not fat :?
Is it an hidden need to express yourself in such a way that you can divest yourself of reality if so again do tell please :)

Qigong....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qigong

Its all about the freedom for me. Yes and divesting oneself from the reality that society pushes onto us all from the time we pop out. I dont have a hidden need to divest myself of societys 'reality'...its not hidden.
Being nude you FEEL everything so much more....if youve ever shaved your head totally bald, you will know what I mean. Its like riding a motorbike and feeling the temp changes in the valleys and hills, the wind...............its good.
Next time your off track and on your own...or with a companion who doesnt mind...try it.

Doesnt sound like using the I with the Q to me!

Some people just cant get over 'getting it off', me , I'm happy to keep my lilly white butt just that!
And as for shaving... showoff's!! i'm trying to keep all I have left. Iv'e always wondered whether people get into bike riding/racing just so they can shave their legs! c'mon, you's all do it, even though there will only ever be one Lance Armstrong, a few miliseconds wont matter.

I chuckled the other day when I read the first paragraph of the link below. Having spent many hours both summer and winter on and around Mt Stirling,
I can't say I have encountered any "naturists" in the flesh (so to speak). Perhaps they only come out when the ski patrol has knocked off for the day.....
