GETTING IT DOWN - SLOWLY

A place to chat about gear and the philosphy of ultralight. Ultralight bushwalking or backpacking focuses on carrying the lightest and simplest kit. There is still a good focus on safety and skill.
Forum rules
Ultralight Bushwalking/backpacking is about more than just gear lists. Ultralight walkers carefully consider gear based on the environment they are entering, the weather forecast, their own skill, other people in the group. Gear and systems are tested and tweaked.
If you are new to this area then welcome - Please remember that although the same ultralight philosophy can be used in all environments that the specific gear and skill required will vary greatly. It is very dangerous to assume that you can just copy someone else's gear list, but you are encouraged to ask questions, learn and start reducing the pack weight and enjoying the freedom that comes.

Common words
Base pack backpacking the mass of the backpack and the gear inside - not including consumables such as food, water and fuel
light backpacking base weight less than 9.1kg
ultralight backpacking base weight less than 4.5kg
super-ultralight backpacking base weight less than 2.3kg
extreme-ultralight backpacking base weight less than 1.4kg

GETTING IT DOWN - SLOWLY

Postby Ellobuddha » Fri 20 Jun, 2014 12:20 pm

I know its a long way off the feather light packs some on here have achieved but Im stoked.

I regularly carried 17-20+ kgs at times.

I packed for a trip up to Kozi. area tomorrow.

Full snow safe gear including food, gas, plenty of warm down gear, safety gear etc etc - 10.4kgs.
It feels like a feather. Checked contents four times as i thought I must have forgotten something.....

A big thanks to all on this site for such handy info. My back appreciates it.

Fantastic stuff EB. Have you done a write up somewhere of all the gear you have chosen to go with?

Travis.

Not as yet Travis. I am still trying to sort out what I like best - jetboil vs ti pot etc.

Biggest weight drop has been in shelter and sleeping bag weight. Going to a mid and a quilt makes a huge difference! I've got a jannu which I love but unless im going exposed alpine I wont cart it now.

Little things as well such as going over to a Zebra light from a heavy icon. Its amazing how the weight creeps up.

Um 10.4kg's with full snow safe gear including food, gas, plenty of warm down gear, safety gear etc, is very light, you summer base pack weight should be very light.

Good stuff getting this light for winter, well done.

Yeh good point. Its out but not packed. Taa

Could get it a little lighter but want to test out warmth of inner. Could drop a jumper and lantern but happy to carry for the comfort factor.

Will add 700ml - nip or two of Glenfiddich - good as two jumpers

Haven't weighed it all Strider but its coming together. I use a set of really accurate scales at work so only doing it bit by bit.

Duomid, inner, quilt, pad, stove, burner and pack equals 4260. Just add in clothing and safety gear and food. So theres the extra 6+kgs.

Im only using my digital fishing scales for total pack weight but reasonably accurate I think.

I chucked the nano puff in as an extra and mainly to possibly sleep in. Im still new to the quilt and mid so a bit gunshy about getting cold sleeping. I stayed at Wilkinsons on the main range with the quilt last weekend off and was toasty in the Jannu but I know the duomid is colder. I have the innernet to try so think it will be warmer. I know i could just use the polar fleece over merino thermal but chucked it in anyway. I still havent had to pull the quilt in tight around my neck yet so plenty more warmth left in it.

Down pants are mont bell pull ons. No zips. Light as. Wear them over base with rainpants over top to hold warmth in and protect them. I normally have merino base but am taking the polarfleece ones for something different and possibly a little lighter.

Yep looks like we might just beat a big dump Monday. Only up for one night Sat.

Mic,

Did you find your mid any warmer with the innernet? Ive got a CF groundsheet and tyvek bag liner from Evan which I like but Im going to try this double inner to see if any warmer or what it will do as far as condensation/touching walls with bag etc. there is a weight gain of about 200grams with the innernet. This one has 10 inch CF walls from base so should cut the drafts down. Opinion?

It should help. Perhaps try and pitch the back of the mid into the wind (as you should lol) so the cuben sides will block a little. You can set the front a little higher if you want the ventilation or have it all down if too windy. Its a NNW flow this weekend. Are you camping at Wilkinsons creek?

Have been pitching the back down and its been working well. The high sides on this inner should cut the breeze well. Up in the air for campsite tomorrow. Few going up so will decide in the morning on route and camp.

After my routine overthinking and adding more items im walking out the door at 12.9kg. Still feels better than before though Ive got to get meaner to myself on my loadout.
