Wandering amongst the huts

Postby neilmny » Sat 29 Nov, 2014 2:10 pm

Just back from a few days wandering (for he good of my health) amongst the huts near Falls Creek.
The weather was superb and the views were stunning. This was my first BHP experience without a pair of down hill skis attached to my feet.
I can't put into words just how good it was other than to say the region is stunning.
I had 3 days but chose to day walk rather than overnight it, partly to keep the family relaxed as I was solo.
I still carried pretty much the works with me just for the exercise.

I know they've all been seen before but attached are some gratuitous shots of the huts I visited. (Please forgive the quality)

Pretty Valley Hut is tiny, it must have been "interesting" for Moondog to wait out the blizzard in it for a few days.
My favourite was Fitzgerald's, there's just something about it, location, appearance, interior, or was it the barrel outside marked for fire fighting only, loved it.

Hey Neil, I always love seeing photos of the huts in BHP. Thanks for sharing!!!! All the huts look so pretty surrounded by greenery and spring flowers. I've been meaning to head up there for a week to do day walks, much like you have done. Here is a photo of Pretty Valley Hut when we went to visit Moondog (on the right hand side of the picture) this past winter:

Wow that sure looks different. Was a good depth of snow as well.
Moondog said he had to dig his way into the hut at one stage.
He wasn't kidding! I read his entries in the hut log book while I was there.

Yep, lots of snow. When we were there, it was already a metre lower than the deepest it reached. So an extra metre of snow in that photo of the PV Hut above would take it right up to the roofline of the veranda. I'm impressed Moondog even found the hut at all!

Fitzgerald in the snow. Good walking from Mittagundi past Kellys Hut via the 107 track.

That's impressive NNW.
I met a young bloke who was an outdoor Ed. contractor at Kelly's or more to the point he caught up to me there.
He was on a mission to check out 107 down to Big River Bridge. It was about 10:30am and he had to be there by 3:30pm.
I wouldn't be game to ask my old legs to do that, not starting at the BHP road anyway.

vicrev,
I stay off mountain to save some dough because even in the summer the top isn't all that cheap.
Just drove up (a beautiful drive) and left my car at the trail head each time.
As far as itinery went it was seek and ye shall find. Saw the weather was going to be good, booked the accommodation, took all the gear (just in case I pulled an overnighter) and some tucker
and then basically played it by ear. Walked everyday carrying pretty much the full set up just to get the extra exercise.
The scenery and weather were way beyond my expectations and I really want to do it again to check out some more before the Xmas hordes turn up
but might overnight this time.
