It worked for me. I walked from Rwetyepme back out to Glen Helen, got a ride within ten minutes to the Ormiston turnoff, and the vehicle about to pull onto the highway as I was getting out of the first car gave me a ride all the way back. It can be a bit hit and miss, but people - locals especially - tend to stop when you're that far from civilisation.

I hitched a ride from Ellery Creek back to Alice in August. It was so easy. Literally within 5 minutes of getting to the main road, we had a lift back the whole way. Offered to contribute to petrol but they didn't want it.
Very easy.
