BIG 4

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I'm pretty happy with the set up for the moment, I don't think I'll have any major changes, although I am interested in testing out a bivy.

How do you find the Big Agnes mats, Dinna?

I'm onto my second after my first had some serious issues and developed a lot of tiny leaks, but they replaced it under warranty, and I've had the new one for about 8 months now and have not yet had any issues.
It's a touch on the heavy side, but is great for the price (i paid around $US80 back when the dollar was high)

Macpac Glissade Pack 3kg

How do you find your Dedos 525 sleeping bag doogs? Does it shed feathers/down/fluff?

I was surprised to see how old your post was, as I only bought this sleeping bag last year - and am over its shedding issues. My old sleeping bag was nearly 20 years old before it started shedding - the only reason I replaced it. I think it has been a case of out of the pot and into the fire.

Just took the plunge and upgraded my pack, from an Osprey.
ZPacks Arc Haul-Zip Backpack - 824grams (Dyneema)
Ground pad - Exped Syn UL7 Long Wide - 595 grams
Tent Zpack Heximid Solo+ - 565 grams
Quilt Zpack Long wide - 655 grams

Total - 2639 grams

Can't see me making any improvements from here for a while.

Ive changed my big 4 around again.

Osprey Aether slightly modified 2020g
Tarptent Stratospire 2 Complete 1670g
Exped Synmat 9 620g
Enlightened Equipment Quilt 610g

Total 4920g

So I am going in circles in a way. Ive been lighter but not as comfortable. I have lighter packs but I just love the comfort of the Osprey. I can have a lighter tent for when Im solo and I may one day but at the moment I like having a generous 2 person tent.

Shelter: Light Heart Gear Duo 1080g approx
Pad: Exped Synmat 7 866g (my next upgrade, don't know why I didn't get the UL version at least...)
Pack: Z-Packs Arc Blast 700g approx, including a few side packs, trekking pole straps etc
Quilt: Katabatic Palisade LW 615g Turns out I didn't need it in long, or wide. Love it, but it's a bit too big for me. Contemplating selling it and getting it in a smaller version...

Total 3261g

A swap to a UL version of the Synmat 7 would bring me down to around 2854g, and I'd be pretty happy with that for now. I also consider the weight of the tent OK to carry solo - I know I could get a smaller, lighter one man tent for when my wife doesn't come, but it's just not worth the money to me right now.

Great thread,

I don't want to hijack the thread but I'll add a fifth, boots as I feel they are up there with packs etc.

Boots - scrapa sl

Pack - Osprey xenith 88

Sleeping bag - snow - old one planet 800l bag, summer is a lighweight north face from Nepal. My go to bag is a salewa I brought 2nd hand from this site for "my daughter" but ahe never got it. It's a great balance between warmth and weight.

Pad- neoair xtherm

Tent - options, summer - either the tarp tent ss2 or northface bivi, winter an old salewa extreme dome.

Sleeping mattress SynMat UL 7 550gm or Synmat UL Short 400gm
Pack Pack Aarn - FEATHERLITE FREEDOM 1900gm (with 2x sports pockets and liners)

Pack is still the big weight...done a couple of multi-nights with it and the first pack I haven't had bruised hips with, but would like to reduce its weight.

Just out of interests sake. When the Versalite arrives try the S2S micro inside it for fit, that may be an ideal combination if you ever go anywhere really cold and will save you purchasing a -40 bag

Sure, will let you know. Not sure I'll ever go to places where I'll need a minus 40 bag, but happy to test whether it would fit :D

Overnight kit

Tent - Vango Halo 300 (for wife and I) plus groundsheet
Pack - Tatonka Yukon 60
Mat - Blackwolf super delux (R 5.0), heavyish but oh so comfy.
Bag - Revelation quilt

9kg

Yet to invest in lighter (more pricy) gear for multi night hikes, or solo hikes.

Re: BIG 4

Postby dagsands » Sun 10 Jan, 2016 3:13 pm

Have just spent a few bucks with Snowys and Macpac upgrading my kit and feel the need to justify the expenditure and this seems an appropriate place! :)

Pack - Osprey Aura Anti Gravity 65L med, 1930g (when not using motorbike panniers :P ). LOVE this women's pack. Had it for a few months now, just day walks filled up for training. Highly recommended!

Tent - Denali Storm III hike tent 3.2kg OR Eureka Rising Sun 2.1kg (the old Eureka I bought in '91 is still great for 1 or 2 but sometimes we'd rather the extra space and Mr Man doesn't mind carrying the extra weight so, fine by me! Can also fit an extra little body when needed) OR for car camping, just bought the Coleman Lakeside 6 Geodesic Dome (two key areas in addition to seams failed on our existing tent over xmas :).

Bag - Mont Constellation 800 (again from 1991) - 1390g, plus just purchased Macpac Escapade 150 Standard (600 Down) 530g, which will beef up the Mont as a liner in cold times and can be used on its own in warmer climes.

Mat - Sea to Summit Comfort Lite Insulated Large, 695g.

With the smaller tent solo, my big 4 is just over 5kg. But I gotta say the Osprey pack feels like I am wearing nothing and makes everything else feel lighter. Same kit in my man's pack feels much heavier.

One of the main reasons for the upgrade was space, especially for warm weather trips. I had a fairly new self inflating foam style regular Thermarest which took up 55x15cm or precious pack/pannier space (and was 1090g). And my Mont takes up 37x20cm without a compression sack. So I am pretty happy to drop $160 on the Macpac lightweight down bag and $195 on the S2S mat which both pack down really small. With my liner I think it will make for a sweet little warm weather sleep system without taking up lots of room. Considered making my own lightweight synthetic quilt from the awesome stuff at Tiergear but once I saw the Escapade I suddenly felt very lazy.

If Snowys get the mats to us in time will give it a test run overnight in Coffs next weekend. Planning to use the Escapade down bag, with the Denali tent, for 6 days on the Abel Tasman walk in March.

I relied heavily on this forum in my decision to purchase the S2S mats. Thanks everyone for your contributions to this forum. I know the large is heavier than the regular and comfort is heavier than the insulated and the insulated is heavier than the non-ins but I don't mind carrying the extra gms when I've had a good night's sleep and I liked the puncture insurance inherent in the two layered system of the comfort and the higher R rating. I also hate having my arms on the floor or having to cross my arms when I sleep on my back (which is what happens on a 55cm wide mat) and I am a bit of a fitful, tossabout side sleeper so the extra width space, albeit just 9cm, I hope will help keep things sweet.

Ok that was all far too verbose for a Big 4 post, but like I said, had to justify that $pending !

Wife stole my quilt even when I said I would buy her one, so now.

ZPacks Arc Haul-Zip Backpack - 824grams (Dyneema)
Ground pad - Exped Syn UL7 Long Wide - 595 grams
Tent Zpack Heximid Solo+ - 565 grams
Quilt EE Long - 538 grams

Her bad luck she could have had the lighter one.

Pack: Osprey Aether 70 (approx 1600g)
Tent: Tarptent Double Moment (approx 1600g once sealed and including stuff bag)
Mat: Thermarest Pro Lite small (330g with additional strap)
Bag: Some random bag with Dupont thermolite(tm) microfibre filling, unknown weight, branded with "Great Outdoors".

The bag is meeting my needs currently, but it's the only one of the 4 I'm thinking about upgrading any time soon.

Postby CasualNerd » Sun 10 Jan, 2016 9:40 pm

I've been on a mission to cut my gear weight down, since getting a new mat and bag things have improved greatly:

Pack: Macpac Torre 90L 3.1Kg / Osprey Kestrel 48L 1.6Kg
Tent: Macpac Olympus 3.1Kg
Mat: S2S Comfort Light insulated 580 Gm
Bag: S2S Trek II 1.05Kg

So I carried nearly 8Kg just for the big four this weekend, which is way less than ideal. Can't wait to afford a smaller / lighter tent then I won't have to carry the big pack very often ! I'm incredibly jealous of those with sub 3Kg gear.

Right, this looks like fun. My turn. This is my lightweight, Spring / Autumn set up, where tenting is required. Oh, and for solo hiking only. (My usual NZ set up is the same minus the tent and sometimes the mat.)

Tent - Zempire Mono. I am about to take one of these on an 8 day bicycle touring trip around Lake Eildon / Mt Buller. Once I thrash it to pieces I will look at finally buying a Mont Moondance 1.
Bag - One Planet Sac 1. Yep, it's a big heavy synthetic bag. But I love it so. Time for a S2S Spark or Trek?
Pack - Macpac Amp Light 45. I sometimes opt for a slightly bigger Osprey, depending on food and water needs.
Mat - Sea to Summit Ultralight Regular. This is another item I will be trialling on my upcoming bike trip.

I haven't purchased all of the following, but my setup will look something like this:

Tent: Big Agnes Cooper Spur UL2 (1.28kg)
Pack: ULA Circuit (1.07kg)
Bag: EE Revelation -6 C quilt (0.63kg)
Pad: S2S Ultralight Insulted Regular (0.49kg)

Total = 3.47 kg

Pretty much upgraded my big 4 now, from a previous cumulative weight of ~7kg. Really happy with that. I can only see me adding a tent, such as the ZPacks hexamid solo, for solo trips once I become really hardcore. The 2P tent is for myself and the GF so could technically ship half the weight off to her and take my weight down to 2.9kg. I would never do that though :P

Been a while since I updated this, so...

For lighter/warmer trips:
Large Thermarest NeoAir Xlite mat (460g)
Western Mountaineering Alpinlite bag (the long version... 935g)
ULA Ohm pack (large... 900g)
MLD cricket tarp (260 incl. ti stakes) + Zpacks solo plus groundsheet (100g) (both cuben... also mix and match with a borah cuben bivy depending on where I'm going - an extra 130g or so for the long version)

For heavier/colder trips:
Large Thermarest NeoAir Xlite mat (460g)
Western Mountaineering Alpinlite bag (the long version... 935g)
OP WBA pack (2.2 kg for the large)
Mont Moondance II tent (bit under 2kg)

So that's 2.7kg for light trips and 5.6kg for heavier trips. Tend to take a horses for courses approach and mix and match between those combinations... eg. will take the OP pack even if warm on scrubbier trips or trips where water is scarce and need to carry a lot. Bivy adds a lot of flexibility and is light enough to carry as an option. Also thinking of getting a quilt for lighter trips which would bring the minimum weight down to about 2.3kg - the WM bag is great but overkill for a lot of situations and often just rely on the bivy.
