Well, finally got this working. Not bad maps, as far as they go. If BaseCamp wasn't so unwieldy the system would be at least as good as the Triton, but for all VantagePoint's faults it's still miles ahead of BaseCamp.
Still, new maps to play with are always a good thing. :)

I agree... basecamp is shocking software.

If they could just enable the mouse controls from gEarth it would be usable.
Left click selects and performs operations. Right click to move and drag. Middle click to change angle and rotate. Or even make the space key make the left key click and drag....
Having three useless buttons and having to move around like that is frustrating.

You can't even zoom out with keys or mouse, you have to use the slide zoom control. And I'm still trying to work out how to plot a cross-country route on it.

You can use the scroll wheel to zoom, and the +/- keys on the num pad to zoom. Home/page up adjust angle, end/pg down adjust rotation.

As far as track logs go, you can add the track to the map yourself, and give back to the community - if you have time.
I'll usually avoid adding routes that are not official tracks, and really avoid any tracks in sensitive areas.

I'm also not sure when Ent last updated the map, so it could have been done already.
Just checked, nope.

I guess I'll have fire up JOSM and fix the Mersey too then...

Thanks icefest, I'm just feeling my way a bit and don't want to stuff up everyone else's good work but I may have a crack at adding the rest of the Meston to Junction track to the map. Sounds like Basecamp's not particularly user friendly but your hot key info will come in handy.

I would have had a track plot to add for the old Ritter's Track a couple of years ago if we hadn't spent so much time off it, scrub bashing and consequently running out of batteries. Luckily we were heading west on a clear day so had a nice mountain to aim for, dunno how you'd manage, without a GPS, in the opposite direction in bad weather.
Really? Plastic track marker ties at 3m intervals... triple toppers we're watching you!

Not on my laptop. None of the keys do anything to the scale. Drives me up the wall.

You should be able to zoom using the fn key and one of the letters like k or i. Have a look at the little blue writing on the laptop keys.

Yes, there's a key shortcut to zoom in, but not to zoom back out, and I'm usually going in and out a lot when trying to plot routes or look at a new area.
Don't get me started. The more I use it, the more I hate it.

Hi all,

If anyone is interested I have uploaded new Garmin OSM maps to Dropbox: http://tinyurl.com/osm-maps

The maps for Tasmania and Victoria have contours and hydro derived from the state mapping services. This means that they are the same as that on the printed maps. I haven't used them in the field yet so I am keen to get some feedback.
See these extracts of Chalice Lake from Basecamp as an example.
The top one has had the OSM hydro removed and overlaid with hydro data and 10m contours from The List.
The bottom one has hydro from OSM (fairly sparse) and 20m contours derived from the 3sec SRTM DEM (not very accurate).

OSM + the List.png
OSM data with contours and hydro from The List
OSM + the List.png (96.93 KiB) Viewed 53168 times

OSM with 20m contours.png
OSM data with 20m contours derived from 3sec SRTM DEM
OSM with 20m contours.png (45.07 KiB) Viewed 53168 times

I haven't been able to locate equivalent data for the other states, so the other maps are just OSM data plus 10m contours derived from the 3sec SRTM DEM.

Cheers
Andrew

Major water bodies (e.g. Lake Rowallan) seem to disappear at the 2km zoom level? For Tas at least.

Thanks Strider, I'll have a look at it.

Is this using GPS or via Basecamp. I'm guessing GPS as I don't think Basecamp has a zoom level.

I assume you mean that as you zoom out it disappears at 2km, rather than when you zoom in?

From memory I don't think The List data differentiates between small or large water bodies. Unlike watercourses which have a multitude of categories.

Yes when zooming out beyond 2km. Etrex 20. On the previous version water appeared blue. On this version it shows as blank space.

Hi all,

Yes there are some issues with drawing order of the Tasmania and Victoria maps.
What looks perfect in Basecamp, doesn't work on the GPS unit. I was only testing with Basecamp as it's much quicker!

Hopefully I will fix them shortly. Will keep you posted.

Thanks for making the map.
I'm not sure what GPS others use so my experience may not be applicable to others.

I found that the Victorian map takes a very long time to load on the etrex 30. It's pretty incredible and useful, but quite slow.

AFAIK Contours Australia has been produced from SRTM 3sec DEM data. I.e. from elevation spots 90m apart (horizontal). To think that you can interpolate 5m contours from this is just dreaming...

Looks good Andrew... NB, how does one get Basecamp to load a new .img map download, I had to copy it to an SD card maybe there's a work around??

Put the img file on a usb drive. I think it needs to be in a folder named 'Garmin'.

You can create a virtual drive, and move the img there, but the virtual drive has to be created as a "removable USB device" rather than a local drive. I haven't tested whether this works if you create the virtual drive as a CD/DVD drive.

But I find it is a bit more convenient to use a USB flash drive, or a SD Card Reader.

Also you can check it using the excellent Javawa software http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html to copy files to and from your GPS to the SD card/Virtual drive and check the file is ok.

I have loaded new versions of the OSM maps for Victoria and Tasmania to dropbox:

http://tinyurl.com/osm-maps

Strider wrote:Major water bodies (e.g. Lake Rowallan) seem to disappear at the 2km zoom level? For Tas at least.

I have fixed the drawing order problem with lakes. You may find the lake obscures some names. I am still working on this.

icefest wrote:I found that the Victorian map takes a very long time to load on the etrex 30. It's pretty incredible and useful, but quite slow.

I also found the old version incredibly slow, to the point I thought it was broken. The new version is not quick, but I think a great improvement on the previous one. I will be out and about this weekend so will have a chance to use it in the field, but please give me feedback. I need to research what affects map re-draw speed.

I suspect it is the level at which contours are drawn. Currently they're either not drawn or they are. If you could make it that at zoom level x only the 50m ones are drawn and that at y only the 100m contours are drawn, loading would be significantly faster.

The other option would be breaking the map into smaller tiles, this would decrease the memory required and speed up the processing.

I'll be roegaining the weekend after next but will give it a test when I'm at the hash-house.

Thanks Andrew! Just wondering, are there similar issues in the NSW set that'll also get updated soon? I also noticed the speed of rendering is somewhat delayed in the NSW mapset (on an Oregon 650).

I have set the 10/20m contours to drop out at lower zoom levels. Problem with Victoria is that the contours are 10m or 20m depending on the area (as are the paper maps), so there would not always be a 50m contour.
icefest wrote:The other option would be breaking the map into smaller tiles, this would decrease the memory required and speed up the processing.

I have thought about this, but I'm not sure about it. The Garmin Aus Topo is 3.1Gb - much bigger that this at 430Mb.

The NSW map (as are all except TAS and VIC) is just OSM data, plus contours from SRTM DEM. I haven't actually used the NSW map, but I didn't notice any problem when I was using the VIC map created in the same way.

I haven't been able to find any hydro and/or contour data to download for any other states, but if anyone knows where they can be found, please let me know.

The rendering speed comparison on the NSW map was with the default OSM download from <http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl> with Contour Australia 5m overlay. It's possible that your dataset is more comprehensive, hence the slower rendering. I like the colour combination on your map as I can finally see all the streams. Again, a thank you!
