How to Upload and Attach Images to Forum Posts

Forum rules
Please keep the width of embedded images (using [img] [/img] tags) in this forum to no more than 800 pixels wide (this will avoid them being clipped without notice by most users' window sizes). Attached images can be any resolution so long as the file size is no more than 1 MB (attachments will be displayed by the forums as thumbnails no larger than 800 pixels linked to the full-size image).

Please include a description of the pictures' content so that readers know what they're all about.

For topics focussed on narrative rather than the photos, please consider posting in one of the 'Trip Report' forums instead.

How to Upload and Attach Images to Forum Posts

If you do not have access to a web site on which you can host your photos, and which will allow those photos to be viewed on other web sites, you will not be able to embed them into forum posts in the usual way. However, you can upload your photos to the Bushwalk Tasmania database and "attach" them to your forum posts instead.

To attach a photo:
  • Begin a new forum post (or edit an existing post) by, eg, clicking a 'New Topic' or 'Reply' forum button.
  • Type in (or edit) the text of your post as usual.
  • Click the 'Upload attachment' tab below the text entry box (the tab is in a group of 3 tabs: 'Options', 'Upload attachment', 'Poll creation' - it is below the 'Save', 'Preview', 'Submit' buttons and above the list of checkboxes - see the attached image).
  • After clicking this tab, new fields and buttons will appear. Click the 'Browse' button, and use your browser's dialogue window to choose the image wherever it is stored on your computer.
  • Click the 'Add the file' button to upload the image from your computer to the forums database.
  • Click in the text of your message where you want the image to appear.
  • Click the 'Place inline' button near the image link below the text box. The forums software will place a bit of BBCode text into your message text something like, '[attachment=x]apicture.jpg[/attachment]'. When displaying your message on the forums, this text will automatically be replaced with the uploaded image.

Once you've confirmed that the image is being displayed in the forums OK, you can delete it from your own computer, if it is an image that you do not wish to keep there.

Note that image attachments will be automatically resized, if necessary, to a maximum of 800 pixel when displayed in the forums. Clicking on a resized image thumbnail will display it in it's original (uploaded) size. Please do not attach any files larger than 1 MB. You can optionally add a comment/note for each attachment which will always be displayed with the attachment. The file name will also be displayed with the attachment as well as a border.

Note that copyright laws mean that you should have permission from the owner of a picture before using in this way.

Hi - having some trouble posting some pics, due to the file being too large

How do I make the file smaller than 1 MB?
When I go to properties for my image, I see some are over 3 MB
I can only seem to resize them, not make the file smaller
I'm just using the in-house Windows picture library

I know there is probably some really simple answer here.......
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

I'm probably the least qualified.. and a mac user.

Are you saving the re-sized image somewhere? Can you take a screenshot and re-size in your finder? Could you use a free photo-sharing site like photobucket etc?
If all else fails you can send them to me (email) and I can edit them into your posts.. maybe this helps (in the absence of more qualified advice).

OSM from memory you said the pics were taken by your iphone? If so you can get an app called tapatalk for your phone which is a really easy way to view and post on the forum (and others). That way it will attach and resize the photos for you with no fuss straight from your phone.

Step 1: Install software that can save a file to a different size and format. If you have nothing else, consider FastStone Photo Resizer.
Step 2: Save the image as a JPG file with a smaller size AND lower quality.

e.g.The original picture - A big panorama

Open in Faststone and resize to an 800X600 JPG file at lower quality - experimenting might be necessary.

faststone2.jpg
faststone2.jpg (98.73 KiB) Viewed 128901 times

faststone3.jpg

After adjusting the settings, click the convert button.

Not bad when you consider it is < 1% of the original file size!

wT's is correct. To summarise, apart from resizing the image, the best way to reduce it's file size is to convert it to a JPEG and when saving it as a JPEG, use a lower quality setting. This will reduce the quality of the image a bit and reduce the file size a LOT.

(Reducing the quality to 80% or 0.8 will reduce the file size a lot, and most people would not notice the difference in looking at the image casually. Reducing to less than about 50% or 0.5 the image will be noticeably grainy looking.) 70% is still fine for most purposes posting to the web.

I use this, very easy - right-click and resize...
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-ti ... ws-7vista/

Only tip is to make sure you don't over-write your original file/s. Easiest way of avoiding that is to copy your file/s into a folder called, say, resize.
Then you can resize the files and overwrite the originals so you don't get filenames with the word "Copy" in them.

When uploading a photo, can someone please tell me how you format it so that there is a count of how many times the picture is viewed? I notice in the games - where am I - that some pictures have a counter and some don't. I can't seem to find an obvious way to add a counter. Thanks.

Counter occurs if you upload the file to the forum as opposed to inserting a link to an image already hosted online somewhere.

Thats ny guess, but i just double checked and i think im wrong. Perhaps its an option when uploading an image to the site?

It looks to me like a counter is there on both images?

(However in another thread i have uploaded an image and i dont think there is a counter so there must be more to it?)

The only thing i did differently in another thread was i didnt put a comment with the picture where as i did put the comment 'test' with one of the pictures above.

I checked the other image on desktop as opposed to mobile, and while the counter wasnt visible when i put the arrow over the image it came up with a view count. I then edited the post, delete the image as i also noticed from my mobile it had loaded a full size image. Upon attaching a smaller copy of the image, and adding a title to the image a counter has now appeared with the image.
