Western and Eastern Arthurs traverse

A 14 day traverse of the Western and Eastern Arthurs, Tasmania! 50 year old me and 3 Gen Y hiking buddies. Age doesn't matter (so they say). What does qualify you for this hike is an expertise in ducking, weaving, hurdling, limbo dancing, carrying a VERY heavy pack, a vague love of heights, a penchant for putting on soggy socks each morning, cairn spotting, and finally a love of "type 2 fun" (look it up on Urban Dictionary) http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... type+2+fun.

This walk has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the hardest in Australia, and the walker registration books indicate that a significant number of people quit. Prepare well. If it looks like becoming type 3 fun for you, then turn back!

nice work. I did the same walk 4 years ago at the same time of year and we didn't get a single view the entire trip! Luckily I've seen it all on other trips so the weather made it more adventurous. Rained and snowed the whole time. Was epic. Didn't see anyone up there for a 10 day stretch. Nice work! Love the Arthurs!

Loved your report Jane. I did full W Arthurs traverse 2 years ago from Scotts Peak and then back to finish it with Eastern Arthurs in Jan this year in via Yo Yo Track and out to Farmhouse creek. I'm surprised your pack weight was only 23kg as that was my weight just for E Arthurs alone. (Although not sharing tent or cooking with anyone makes a difference I suppose) I'm of a similar vintage and found it quite a challenge and yes the body wasn't quite the same on completion (knee injury) From your weather description it sounds as if we were possibly there at similar times and I concur with dry bagging as yes our packs were sopping inside and out as were the carriers of said packs.
A note about the kidney beans. I have dehydrated canned kidney beans and these have rehydrated quite well. I like your idea for runny custard, usually do hot chocolate but that sounded like a nice change. Thank you for writing your report.

Thanks for your comments. Sounds as though I did well to keep my pack to 23kg - glad I didn't have to carry more than this!
The "dried kidney beans" fortunately were only consumed by one in our group (but very unfortunate for him). We did a mixture of shared + individual meals to accommodate a mixed vegetarian/meat-eating group. One of my shared meals was based on dehydrated canned kidney beans and we had no problems. I find that these dry better if I break them up a little before spreading them on the dehydrator tray.
