Non-dairy "milks", yoghurt

Postby sweetade » Tue 03 Jan, 2017 8:05 am

I don't like either fresh or powdered milk and usually have soy, almond or oat milk with my muesli plus a bit of yoghurt.
Does anyone know of any dried non-dairy "milks" (such as soy, almond)? I did try soy once but it tasted awful, I think it was soy flour rather than milk. I've also tried dried coconut powder, but it's far too rich. Mostly I just have water.
I remember in the past being able to get dried yoghurt from bushwalking stores but haven't seen it in ages.

Hi Sweetade
Water works fine but gets boring. Over a long trek it is good to mix it up a bit.
Have you tried Bonvit powdered soymilk? It is not too bad in hot bevs, cereal and smoothies/shakes http://www.bonvit.com.au/healthy_foods_soy_milk.html
I have seen organic coconut milk powder in health food stores too. I have used powdered coconut electrolytes as a milk replacement while walking across the Pilbara and Kimberley last year, not bad if cool but rank when your water warms up. The great thing about dried stuff, if it is too rich just dilute it.
I don't mind carrying a carton or 2 of my favourite dairy free milk when I consider I still need to carry the water to rehydrate a powdered substitute. Most brands, including the organics, will keep for a couple of days below 40C after opening. I carried cartons of organic almond and rice milks as I walked between Katherine and Rockhampton this year and used one 1lt box every 2-3 days, they were fine without refridgeration.

A relative of mine is non-dairy and uses camel milk, but he lives in the UAE so its easy to get.
A search comes up with a company in Victoria doing camel milk products but they dont list powdered milk.
I saw this on Amazon:

Could you provide any further information about rice or oat milks in powdered forms?

BTW I have ordered the bonvit soy milk online and look forward to trying it.

Powdered Goat milk....Woolies online.
Rice milk powder...watery, taste depends on manufacturer
& added ingredients. Asian supermarts.
Oat milk powder...more body than rice milk. Health food stores.
http://www.naturalsugars.co.nz/oat-milk-powder
Sheep milk powder....chemist warehouse online.
Sesame milk powder...google. Black sesame bitter, toasted White Sesame slightly bitter, but do-able.
More of a additive to other fluids than a full on milk.
Potato milk powder... google.
Yogurt powder ....woolies, make the night before
in the bush in suitable container & in the morning
use on breaky or add favorite flavoured powder to
make a lassie shake. Dehydrate at home & bash it to
make your own powder.

I'll pop into the local supermarts tomorrow & see
what they have on the shelves. We're so lucky to have a
choice of Korean, Chinese, Thai, African , Indian,
Japanese & Muslim marts all within 20mins drive.

Hmm, hadn't thought of making my own yoghurt in the bush. Haven't done it before. Is any special equipment needed?

For a single person overnighting a 500ml widemouth vacuum flask is fine...just wrap it in a homemade
reflectix/neoprene cosy, spare clothes & stick it in you backpack overnight to keep it warm as long as possible.

Experiment before you head out.....

Surprisingly plenty of non dairy options in your
local supermarket.

Milk section - powdered goat milk.
Asian section...powdered coconut milk or cream.
Healthy section...light coconut milk & cocoa powder plus many of others powders to choose from.
Make your own yogurt section had about
10 different flavours.

What about a dairy free protein powder? Vanilla flavour would probably be fine with muesli and you only need to add water.

I'm lactose intolerant so usually use a vanilla protein powder in place of milk in my coffee ;) but I have, like some one mentioned, carried UHT milk for up to 3 days in summer and 4 in winter without any trouble. Depending on what you need it for, non-dairy creamers (like coffee mate) are a good substitute for your coffee. Or get some lactase tablets from your chemist and just use a skim milk powder if you can.
Woolies usually has some soy yoghurt powders, I've made Bush yoghurt in my thermos a few times for the kids.
