Bringing dehydrated food from NSW into Tasmania

I'm planning on going over to Tassie from NSW in December for some multi day hikes and want to bring some pre home made dehydrated food. I'm a little confused if this is allowed? On the Biosecurity Tasmania website it mentions that 'Freeze dried camping foods' are permitted, but is this referring to commercially packaged meals? Also my food would be dehydrated and not freeze dried?

We've been doing it on our trips from the U.S. to Tasmania without issue. Maybe we've been lucky? I don't know. We don't bring any dehydrated meat.

I never could figure out the rules from what I'd read online. I suspect each customs official has a certain degree of latitude in deciding what to flag. So I'm completely honest with them and go prepared with a backup plan in case they decide to confiscate items.

Spot on. Best bet is to be honest with them and you'll most likely be fine. They'll appreciate your efforts to do the right thing by contacting them in advance for advice.

Coming across on the boat I have declared several times that I have home dried pre-cooked bushwalking food and not had a problem. It is fresh fruit and veggies, fish and foxes that are not allowed.

There are no quarantine inspections for domestic arrivals in Tasmania. Fruit and vegetable are banned, and your baggage may be sniffed by a cute little doggie, but they have never detected the dehydrated meals in my backpack.

There are guaranteed quarantine inspections if you come over on the boat - much less scrutiny if flying in.

I always drive as it makes getting around so much easier.

Before moving here 12 months ago, we never had any issues bringing home dehydrated food from WA.
