I tried various options, shephard's hooks, v stakes, Easton nails etc. I found the V stakes to not do so well in rocky ground but are great for softer soil, the hook stakes I just don't have much love for at all.
I like to have pegs that won't fail or require me to move the tent a few times whilst pitching, so I've got a few heavy duty pegs. Usually 2 of the big pegs and 4 of the smaller pegs, depending where I am going. Though it's been a while since I've had the chance to go out due to work and a new family.
Both styles are titanium, the smaller one is just a Vargo thing bough on eBay. The second type (~36g) was made by a friend for me out of some grade 5 titanium rod I bought on eBay a few years ago (both squeaky clean as they come from the spares bag).
In any case, for especially difficult ground I've found nothing beats the chunky peg, it's not exactly ultralight, but I needn't be careful with it either so spares are less essential.
