Yes and no respectively. A clue. The pic was taken in winter.

10 km compared to the size of the visible universe is nothing! The Big Dipper?

The view seems to be of Hotham and the start of the ridge out to Loch.
It is above the tree line - which might place him at the open top before the Twin Knobs - just near where Champion Spur connects to the ridge.

Not the Big Dipper, not Loch or Hotham behind. I'm unsure that Loch and Hotham can be viewed from where the pic was taken. You are getting very close, but not quite.

I did not say Loch was in view - and its true that Hotham is just out of view on the right side.
This is the picture from near the spot I described. Your background matches the area in the red box.

I have been past the Twin Knobs, but not over them, so it could be on one of those tops.

Eggs, my pic was not taken from where your pic was teken, but it's close. I had to carefully check the pics, and you are right. In your picture the obvious ridge bottom right to top left meeting the ridge to the left of the wide saddle is the one in my picture.

Finally! This was taken in nearly exactly the same sopt as your pic. I managed to get down the bump, then did a very sharp turn to the laft to finish up just in front of a small cliff (visible in your pic), skis close to the vertical drop into the hollow, ski tails close to the steep slope on the east. The pack and skis came off quickly, then race back to hopefully see someone prang. Two pics were taken of this. Here's the next one, and the little cliff with the hollow.

Your protest has been recorded. Please note that a section of track that has the picture location is not enough. The place must be cited, and sighted. I chose the pic as it was from very nearly the same place as the last one, Eggs' pic of the hollow at Twin Knobs. Also, I was feeling cheeky. I will have to stop giving all these clues! Not that I have any - I'm clueless.

I cannot recall the current pic but it may be near Speculation, looking westish. If it is not then it must be somewhere else. One of these two places is correct.

If it's not near Spec then it's somewhere else, and I win! Yay me. Maybe the top of Bon Accord Spur, taken from near the road.

Odd, he was online earlier this morning. Maybe he just forgot. But I'll fill the gap - where in Victoria would you find this:

What are the thoughts on googling for answers? Is it a bit cheesy, or is it OK if it looks like no-one is going to get the answer, or is it considered fair game?

Reason I ask is because I just googled and found the answer...

If you can use GoogleEarth for landscape images, then Googling on a question like this is fair game.

Absolutely fair game and often used by me else I wouldn't be able to play outside my own experience. The rules certainly don't disallow it and I'd suggest that many photos would go unanswered stifling the game. In any case how would you police it?
