Fibre in concentrated rations query

Postby Moondog55 » Fri 23 Feb, 2018 9:22 am

We older folk sometimes need an extra dose of All-Bran so to speak
In the coming weeks I will be starting my winter food prep and I will be making up a big batch of Chockolate Kram.
While my usual mix contains desiccated coconut, toasted rolled oats and lots of chopped nuts and dried fruit it is still basically sugar, milk powder and fat with cocoa powder added so this year i was thinking about adding some of that invisible fibre old people use "Benefiber" I've been using it along with psyllium at my GPs suggestion for a while now in another bullet in the magazine to help with blood pressure and cholesterol control
Any thoughts on ratios and any other thoughts such as substituting Hospital Sustagen for the milk powder for the added vitamins?

I have not tried this .. yet.
But coconut milk powder rather than milk powder? Has more kj. I'm not certain of the taste though. If you have coconut already then if might be an overload.

Fiber? Umm I'm trying some prunes - they are in the fridge with some port, chili flakes, cinnamon, cloves .. forgot nutmeg. Should be ok to test in a weeks time, hopefully tasty for the nights desert.
Fruits are fairly good for fiber. I do like apricots .. so maybe some of them marinated would be good too .. chose some nice spirit?
{edit ... brandy .. a Dutch thing apparently or Moscato & Thyme for a wine treatment ... I'd go brandy}

Kiwi Fruit is sugar, fibre, plus all the right enzymes to keep things moving. Hard to go wrong with prunes though.

I put too much chilli in the port mix with the prunes ... makes it difficult to judge the rest.
But they are good eating never the less. Must make the next batch so they are ready when these run out.

Watch out for the after burn.
I think I will add some extra fibre to the Kram this year, not a lot but a hundred grams in the batch, and this seasons batch should be about 5 kilos or so. I will be roasting the rolled oats for the new batch, I seem to be developing a sensitivity to under cooked oats. After due though and consideration I did buy a tin of Hospital grade Sustagen, just in case I lack micro-nutrients in my general easy cook diet this winter

Walking though Safeway with Cecile the other day I realised that the easiest way to do this is just crumble breakfast cereal into the mix. So much easier than roasting my own oats.
If only Whittakers would make a bushwalkers Muesli type chockolate bar.

"Chockolate Kram"?

That sounds like the problem, not the solution.

What about psyllium etc ? Even some flavoured Metamucil ?

It's pretty much pure fibre

Benefibre - 3.8 grams for 3 grams of fibre .. I cannot taste it in water.

I decided against the Benefibre. I did think seriously about it but the combination of Nutrigrain plus coconut, almond flakes and pecans and dried fruits should be enough. This year I changed a few other things too, I used powdered glucose rather than black sugar because it is more easily converted to energy and it is less cloying on the tongue and palate and I left out the dates for the same reason substituting banana chips. When it cools down and gone solid I'll portion it up. I may even vacuum seal it using our new kitchen toy

Sorry for not taking pix, but it was all cut and vacuum packed when I thought of it.
This years batch is still super sweet but that is the instant energy part of it, not as sweet as a Mars bar tho; packed in 120 gram portions wrapped in kitchen paper before being vacuum bagged. Free samples to anybody who visits me

I'm not sure about the official content figures, but I find chia seeds really keep things moving.

There was a segment on the ABC News this morning about "Broccoli lattes" - basically using powdered broccoli instead of coffee:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2018-0 ... ch/9834964
They freeze dry the broccoli then powder it.

It claims that this is a good way to add fibre to your diet (plus all the other good things in broccoli).

A quick search will find commercial suppliers of powdered broccoli and other fruits/vegies.

OMG Simply awful thought, having once made the mistake of eating FD broccoli and regretting it for days afterwards I can't imagine much worse.

Don't know about the freeze dried version but dehydrated broccoli has become a staple item in our bushwalking menu. It mostly keeps its shape but by the end there are a lot of the little green spheres (what are those called?) in the bottom of the ziplock. Good stuff, easy to rehydrate, and very tasty ------ **IF** you like broccoli. If you hate broccoli then there is no way to prepare it that will appease you. Certainly not as a substitute for coffee.

I wasn't really thinking of it as a coffee substitute.
Maybe adding a couple of spoonfuls to your evening dinner if you're worried about getting enough fibre (as per the original post).
Similarly a couple of spoonfuls of powdered fruit with your breakfast of choice.

I like fresh broccoli cooked properly [ that is just barely and still crunchy] but the FD stuff I tried meant I had to walk and ski alone for days afterwards due to clouds of foul sulphur hanging around me, not at all the reaction I have to the fresh vegetable

One thing I like to add into my muesli mix is processed bran. You can buy this in bags cheaply from Woolworths. Coles doesn't seem to stock it.

How much fiber, well you probably don't need much if you have fiber in your diet across the board and you already have oats. For processed bran I would add it in at the most 50% of the oats.

Very interesting thread. Although i hardly eat any processed food, make my own almost everything from scratch, eat a tonne of pulses, seeds, nuts, fruit and veg, i am still interested in different ways of adding fibre.

I have used (the brand is kind of irrelevant, i am not associated with any company) the following:
- Greens and Reds powder from Nutraorganics - has a great ingredients list so you are getting lots of good stuff, not just fibre. I find it works well in breakfast mixes or homemade muesli bars. Its a bit sweetish, so i don't think it works that well in savoury recipes but you can hide it in lots of things.
- have used a Kale powder, and a Spirulina one, not sure of the brand, but i prefer a blended mix so that it targets different aspects of nutrition/digestion rather than just one plant ground up.
- Thriving Protein from Nutraorganics - although its a protein supplement, it has a good fibre content. Good as an allrounder.

While i don't agree with foods being labelled as "superfoods" i have investigated a lot of the stuff out there in terms of boosting nutrition not just at home but also on a multi-day bushwalk or for general camping. Its worth investigating beyond the hype and looking at the benefits/calories/etc to see if it could be useful in the bush. There's a lot of it out there and while i am not vegan, i think there are a lot of vegan things out there that are useful and worth investigating further. If it will give me more fibre or energy I'll give it a go. Worth checking out the healthfood aisle of the supermarket or a specialty heath shop.

That was hilarious, Huntsman.

Moondog, not sure if you have tried Macrovic (also called Movicol) but it is pretty good stuff that comes in individual sachets so you could just add one a day to a mug of water. A softener and a nice gentle little reminder to the colon to keep on moving stuff on through. It doesn't result in any 'urgency' issues associated with lots of other laxatives. We use it a lot at work for our postnatal women and I have tried it myself, I think it out performs anything else we use ie. coloxyl and senna tablets, normacol ( a fibre/softner), metamucil, and lactulose -have seen some messy outcomes from the last one, not anything you would hope to happen when bush walking with only one pair of jocks!

Lactulose sux. Pre surgery when I was on Endone and Morphine I had to use the stuff for a couple of weeks.
The crushed Nutrigrain actually worked quite well. Interestingly I only ate about a quarter of my Kram ration, I found it too sweet

That guy in the video waited too long to "deliver".

Moondog, what about rigging up a Platypus with a certain type of nozzle?
