NSW Water Availability - Ongoing Thread

Postby ribuck » Mon 09 Apr, 2018 1:17 pm

People are always asking about water availability for places like Mt Solitary and Mobbs Soak, so maybe we can keep a thread going for that purpose.

There was water at Mobbs Soak yesterday, near the cave. The level is low, it's not flowing, and it's full of wrigglers and doesn't smell great, but with filtering and treatment it's usable. There were also some small pools to the south where the track crosses Merrigal Creek, and that water was much more appealing.

Does anyone have a recent water report for 100 Man Cave?

Also keen on hearing a recent report from 100 man cave.

Seems like the climate is changing.. Autumm is is now hot and dry which is making finding water more challenging. :(

NSW is quite a large area ... I'd think that separating it up into different areas would be helpfull?

From the posts I have read about water availability of the years here, it is mainly the Blue Mountains that get referenced. Most probably easiest if people just tack their post onto an existing thread that references the location.

At Hundred Man Cave yesterday there were some small pools of water, fed by a seep, six minutes downhill from the cave. A little further down, in Ti Willa Creek proper, there was a clear deep pool fed by a good trickle.

Just back from the Nattai between Starlights and Nattai Rd. Been walking the area for thirty years, and Troys Ck and Wanganderry Ck were dry for the first time in my experience. The river is barely flowing, and by the time you get down to Nattai Rd it is a series of disconnected pools. The spring fed stream below the switchback on Nattai Rd is just flowing, while the creek that runs under the old log bridge is dry there, but running slowly further up the hill.

When I was there 2 weeks ago, Troys Creek was dry at the track crossing, but was flowing a little and there were pools about 50m upstream.

Got home from the splendour rock service and so I passed a couple of usual water spots

Breakfast creek on fire trail: barely flowing, some still pools with a bunch of wrigglies

Mobbs soak: didn't stop to look but everyone I passed said it was dry. Possibly some water upstream

Breakfast creek via steep hill: nothing.

I didn't investigate too much beyond walking through so it is possible that these spots have some water somewhere but I wouldn't be too sure. I don't think everyone at the service did a full water carry like me though so there's probably something somewhere.

I also just got back from Splendour Rock, somjust to clarify...

Mobbs Soak. Nothing flowing but there are 3 or 4 small pools about 50m upstream from the cave with water. It has a green tinge and contains wrigglies. I took a litre of it but didn't end up drinking it.

Breakfast Creek at junction with Carlons Creek. Nothing flowing but some nice pools of clear water 100m downstream from the junction where I picked up plenty of water (and carried it up to Splendour Rock). My friends picked up their water 100m upstream from the junction.

P.S. It was a very sombre and appropriate service this morning. Moving.

On the 12th of June there was water at Mobbs Soak.

There was also plenty of clean water in the rock pools at Dingo Gap

Anyone have a recent report of how much water is in the Coal Seam Cave barrel?

Given the recent rain around Sydney I am assuming its full/overflowing.

Edit: 15/07/18 - As expected, barrel was full.

Mobbs no water all dry! 10/7/18. A little puddle near end of cave but if no rain will be dry.
Take extra water if going to splendour rock.

Mobbs Soak last Sunday - 3 small stagnant pools 50m upstream from the cave. Sliprail Creek - a trickle flowing across the fire trail.

Tyreless - do you happen to know if Breakfast Creek was flowing - both at the ford, and at Carlon Creek?

Breakfast Creek was dry where I crossed it a week ago (GR412555). And it was dry at the base of Black Horse Ridge a fortnight ago.

Jonno - When I walked Breakfast Creek earlier in the month there were three small pools between the Coxs and Carlon Creek. The rest of it was dry. I also saw some photos recently of the ford (I assume this is where the firetrail crosses the uppersection after it flows down from the swamp on Narrow Neck?) and it wasn't flowing there but there was enough water to fill up with.

Walked Kanangra to Katoomba on Saturday. Rained a bit in the mountains and out Oberon way on Friday so there were lots of pools on Kanangra Tops.

Dex Creek - The usual pool at was completely dry
Kanangra Creek - Only found one small pool about 100m up from Coxs junction, otherwise dry in this area

I assume you only checked the bottom 100m of Kanangra Creek?

Yeah, didn't check much upstream of the pool.

I wouldn't expect much for the next few 100m upstream, based on what it was like last time Kanangra Creek was really dry.

How's Cox's looking these days? Doing a loop and plan on camping near the Breakfast Creek junction. Any other water sources nearby?

Yesterday coxes had pretty good water in it, not to murky, reasonable flow. Mobbs the stagnent pools were very stagnent and very low, not even a trickle of flow to be seen.

Mt Solitary a week ago (before last weekend's rain). I was heading up from the Kedumba River, and asked some people coming the other way (with overnight packs) if there was any water up there. "It's absolutely dry", they assured me.

It felt particularly dry up top, yet I found some usable water in the leech pit (upstream from the campsite at Sing-a-jinga-well creek). At Chinamans Gully I was surprised to find a dozen little pools in the creek, plus a few pools in the little side-stream that feeds into it.

The next day I went exploring towards Greenfields Lookout. I hoped that the last burnoff might have made it easier to get there, but it was as scratchy as ever. Greenfields Cave looked quite habitable, but looked like it hadn't been used for a long time. Anyway, there was a pool of good water right at the end of Greenfields Creek just before it tips over the edge of Mt Solitary.
