Do you want a drone with that?

Postby Lophophaps » Thu 01 Nov, 2018 2:52 pm

https://www.smh.com.au/business/compani ... 50d4e.html
"Australians are now able to get a drone bundled into their mobile phone plan as part of Telstra’s strategy to revive the brand and retain its customers amid intense competition from rival telecommunications companies.

"The country’s biggest telco is drastically shaking up the way it offers mobile plans and home broadband bundles, with 20 accessories and devices including smart watches and speakers to be provided as optional extras. The range will be increased to more than 30 devices ahead of Christmas."

Just what I need for a walk in a national park. If I get enough mobile phones the drones can carry my pack, and maybe me.

In the past, to setup a place called home, one needs a fridge, washing machine and TV. Nowadays, the above + laptop, smartphone, tablet, home broadband/wifi, laptop, smartwatch, home server, wireless speaker... And roof top solar panel to keep a lid on power consumption. Oh, and a drone...

Let’s hope they bundle in lots of information on the legalities of drone operation.

A poor service will not be augmented by trinkets. The best way to long-term profit and survival is to look after the staff and the customers, so this should be their focus. Agree, a dumb idea. Instead of keen people buying drones they will be part of a package, equal to a day walker attempting a remote peak. Too many drones crowding the skies is a risk. Of course there will be more drones soon. Victoria has an election in a month and by mid-2019 there will be a federal election.

If Telstra want me back there's only one major change they need to make: a reasonably priced, data limited NBN package. I'd rather pay $40 per month for 50GB, than $70 or more for unlimited use. I don't need unlimited data, but I am trying to survive on a very limited budget. Make it affordable and more people will use you.
A proper NBN would be nice too, but that's political (thanks Rupert) and not really Telstra's fault.

Oh, for the days when Telecom Australia was a publicly owned organisation.

NBN was both for improved speed but also revenue from up-sell for the businesses. There’s no free lunch in this system.

I'm not asking for free. I'm asking for a package suited to my requirements. I don't have a problem paying for what I use. I do object to being forced to pay for what I don't use or need.

Yes that is seriously dumb. Who in their right mind would hear this suggestion and think ah yes there's the policy for us...

Unless of course it's a recent thing in order to shoot the drones out of the sky of course.

Would you be happy if Telstra offered a complimentary ULA Catalyst instead of a drone?

x2, on all points. Especially an NBN option. Are there any providers doing $40/50 gig level stuff anymore ? I am on the hunt for one.

Ah yes the old days of telecom, electricity boards and markets operating at least some of the time for the public good. Can you imagine even trying to market this to the average Australian in 1991. We have privatised a range of stuff, are probably going to hike prices about 400% over the next generation, your kids will never afford a house in a large city, but they could be eligible for a small flying toy.

No. I'd still end up paying more for data I don't use.

If the Catalyst was by way of an apology for stuffing me around and was accompanied by a suitable package, I could be tempted. As long as it was in the right colour.
