Jagungal in 3 days

Postby bushnut » Mon 26 Nov, 2018 7:51 am

Hi again Folks

Can anyone provide any insight on whether its possible to do the Jagungal circuit (RM, Derschko's, summit, O'keefes - or reverse) in three days starting at about 1pm on the first day?

I know this depends on how fast we are - I don't want to rush nor walk at 2km/h. Also much prefer getting into camp well before sun down.

Any thoughts are always appreciated!

Thanks

I don't think you'd have any difficulty doing it easily within those loosely defined parameters you mention. Especially if it's in Eastern Summer Time.

Easily achieved in 3 days.

Day 1 - to Derschko's. This is the shortest leg - under 4 hours. Nicest camping on the ridge to the east of the hut (above the dunny) with good view of Jagungal. Various places with water to stop before Derschko's if you are running late.
Day 2 - Summit from the weather station and though to O'Keefes or Bogong Creek.
Day 3 - Walk out via Farm Ridge.

There is no water along the Farmhouse ridge (there is actually a little soak towards the end but only after wet conditions and the route now bypasses it) but the rest of the time there is plenty.

Thanks - really good to know. I can always do some exploring with the extra time.

So, in terms of water does that mean that after summit there isn't any reliable source? Or is that only after Bogong?

I was assuming you would climb Jagungal from the weather station without packs. The creek just east of the met station will have water.
After Bogong Creek (between O'Keefes and Farmhouse Ridge) there is no water until you get to the Tumut River at the northern end of Farmhouse Ridge.

I think I can manage the 10kms or so from Bogong to the Tumut without water - thanks!

On the loop I don't bother carrying water or at most 1/2 a litre. I do top up for Farmhouse Ridge - at least a litre depending on the conditions.

Even in early March?

I am so used to worrying about water...

Yep, even in March. One of the many great things about the alpine is the abundance of water. As Mark mentioned, carrying water is not necessary most of the time. The Round Mountain loop has water ever couple of kilometers at the very least, except for Farm Ridge as mentioned.
