Recommendations for good Jungle hikes?

Postby backyard_botanist » Wed 26 Dec, 2018 10:53 am

I spent a week hiking through some great Jungle in Borneo earlier this year and although it was a great trip I was surprised at how quickly the modern world is creeping into the remote interior of Borneo.

I would like to do something similar in the near future, preferably in an area that hasn't been to modified by modern people (if these areas still exist) just wondering if anyone has done or is aware of any such multi-day hikes? Not stressed about any particular country.

Cheers,

Not alot of information on the Black Cat Trail except that 6 people were killed during attack doing the hike in 2013. It's the kind of hike i'm looking for though.

I recall reading of it not long after and there was some mention of the cause of the violence. There was a limit to the number of guides
allotted to that group in 2013 and i think some jealousy came into it. The perpetrators were really only interested in the natives.
Unfortunately there is little mention of anything post 2013. The Australian High Commission probably has a ban.
It may be worth calling some of the guiding companies who conduct Kokoda tours. Some of them would have been also doing the Black Cat.
Otherwise bribery would likely work up there.

If you want a jungle area that's safe, IE not in a country like Papua New Guinea, I suggest French Guyana. I've never been, but it looks gorgeous, and being France you have a modern tourism industry (well, don't expect the level of care you'd get in Provence or the Alps) and it's safe, the only thing dangerous will be the jungle, so a guide is a must. Costa Rica is another obvious choice, but I don't know how much hiking you can do.

Looks like there is a couple of guiding companies that do hikes in PNG other than kokoda that are worth looking into.

Couldn't find any long multi-day hikes from a quick look in French Guiana, but looks like a pretty amazing place, pretty sure there would have to be something there.

Yeah you're right, there's a few 2 day hikes, but with info in French only, and they don't look that great compared to the shorter walks. A lot of areas are also banned from tourists, as they belong to natives people. The only thing you could do is group tours, with boat trips alongside the river and stops for short day hikes. But just like in the Australian outback (Kimberley, Top End...) they're quite expensive (around 3000 € for 12 days).

Peninsular Malaysia has a few multiday jungle hikes. Many are being encroached on as time goes on.
Gunung Tahan would be the most accessible good trek. Need a guide and it is well regulated.
Up in Royal Belum is probably your best bet for getting eaten by a Tiger
I have done small parts of Trans Titiwangsa, the V2 would be a fantastic hike to do. Not many organised treks.

Willis's Walkabouts (bushwalkingholidays.com.au) has a walk in Vanuatu.
Ed Hill is the guide. I found it the most interesting walk I have ever been on,
however it rarely runs. The natives are friendly and entertaining. but be aware
that things happen in the"island way". (see Wild issue 139)

PNG. you might need to go with a company though. I went last year on an exploratory week long trek (virgin trails) through the jungle and mountains, and it was incredible. Let me know if you want a lead.

Colombia is an up and coming jungle hiking destination.

The Lost City trek is mostly free of roads and passes indigenous villages on its way into a spectacular region of rainforest and ancient ruins.

I had a guide for a remote walk into Ecuadorian jungle, there are some real jungle cowboys there!

If you like big caves amongst rainforest, then Vietnam is your go. Oxalis is the company to look into.

I did several walks in the Goilala region of PNG back in the late 1970's and the one from Garaina to Tapini over the Owen Stanley Range lives in my memory as the most spectacular, with jungles, moss forests, kuni grass valleys, and alpine cycad forests. The people in the villages were very welcoming and I know that the people in this region are working towards accommodating and guiding people through their area. I don't know of any treking companies that promote walks there yet but if you are after adventure, you could arrange local guides to walk through this part of PNG.
