TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Hard case for Inreach Mini

Postby wildwanderer » Sat 05 Jan, 2019 2:04 pm

Just got a inreach mini :D

I was hoping it would fit in the hard case my KTI PLB came in but no luck its about 5mm to big.

While the inreach mini is made of impact plastic and looks like it would withstand a moderate drop, I think the antenna in particular is vunerable should I have a substantial fall (like off a cliff :( ) and land with it between me and a rock.

I did read somewhere of a guy in NZ who wrecked his spot 2 by tripping over and then needed to do a mad 2 day dash to get to a highway before his wife hit the panic/emergency services button. (as he was checking in with her nightly via the spot.)

Anyone have ideas on a suitable hard case? Im hoping to put it in my pack hip belt pocket like I did with the KTI PLB.

I usually have my spot in the top of my pack and have never bothered to put it in a case - now over 8 years old. I don't think it is likely to be damaged there but wearing them or putting them in hip belt pockets is a more risky environment.

The Spot story is a tale of poor communications protocol. They really need to instill in their partner the understanding that no news is good news. As he discovered things can happen - broken device, battery problems, bad transmission environment, forgot to set it off etc. Setting up a decent protocol with your partner at home is vital and can save going to the authorities for things like being ok but overdue, breaking down on the drive, organising a pickup from a different location.

I might end up doing that, though I like having it in the hip belt for a situation where I cant take my pack off. Foot stuck on a scramble or a severe injury back injury etc etc. All unlikely scenarios of course but thats what I bought the inreach for.

Thanks Lamont. Not sure that rubber shell is going to help much better than the existing plastic though.

Im looking at a couple of hard cases on ebay that might fit the bill. there is a a good one on amazon.com for the inreach mini but alas they dont post to Australia.

For what it's worth I have been carrying my Inreach in a zip loc (to protect the face and for rain) in the bottle holder (behind the bottle) lashed to the cord, since I bought it and will continue to do so. Hasn't got a mark on it. I can reach in at any time and grab it. They are tough, people frequently have them attached via the clip to their shoulder strap. I like mine close at hand. In scrub plonk it inside and on top. Lash it with some cord so it doesn't drop to the bottom.

For those interested my ebay hard case arrived today. $5 from China including delivery. (unbelivable how inexpensive this stuff is..)

Quite happy with it. Fits the Inreach Mini perfectly. :D

The outer shell is slightly flexible but is still a hard case and provides the protection I was after. There is foam padding inside and a small internal mesh pocket where i placed a reflective plastic signal mirror. I cut the metal zipper pulls and metal lanyard off and replaced with cord saving aprox 20 grams

53 grams for the case.

Some pics.
