TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Gaiters, big calves and a silly idea

Postby monte » Tue 15 Jan, 2019 9:01 am

Hi Folks

I have huge calves from rowing. These suckers are 54cm around so about 10cm bigger than STS XL gaiters will cover. If you know of some gaiters that will fit me then please let me know.

I'm sitting here with some nasty looking shins from just an hour walking on an unmaintained track so I'm hoping to find something that works.

The silly idea I had was to look at soccer or hockey shin guards and perhaps pair them with some short trail running gaiters. It seems to me they might actually be good because they wouldn't be too hot with the back open and they would be hard at the front where they would take the impact. On the other hand I'd look like a twit ;-)

Cheers

Monte

Sounds like a good idea if you can't customise some gaiters. Can get stretchy sock type shin guards also.

A few years ago I regularly whipper snippered on a large property. I got forearm burns from resting near the engine, even through the shirt sleeve. So used a plastic shin guard on my left arm, worked great!

Try outdoor research crocodile gaiters in XXL. According to their website they are 22.5 inch wide. 56cm (I assume you would need to subtract 2cm minimum for the Velcro closure)

Keep in my mind these are designed for XXL feet. So if you have big calves but smaller feet they may not fit your shoe/boot

Q: How big of a leg calf will the XXL Croc. Gaiter fit ? I am looking for something that will fit over my insulated bibs while big game hunting in the winter . Your XL Croc. that I purchased will not fit .

A: The XXL Crocodile Gaiters have a circumference measurement of 22.5" at their widest point. (This is the length of the top edge of the gaiter when laid open and flat.)

Looks like you'd have to wait for about a year. See:

I forgot about that.
Gaiters are not the easiest things to make despite the apparent simplicity, but a DIY solution to add extra calf width shouldn't be too hard.
Pix please of the offending articles so I can give a better opinion.

Looks like since that thread the website has been taken down too. When he comes back I'd be keen on getting some. I will investigate the XXL Crocodile Gaiters as that should give be around an inch to spare.

Regarding pics of the offending articles I'm guessing you mean my calves ;-P I don't want to scare anyone!

My dad made his own gaiters from canvas. I think he either handstitched them or got mum to use her industrial sewing machine when she had it, but i have sewn marine grade cotton canvas on a domestic sewing machine. His gaiters were a simple tube. They were a little loose, but for him, they were also against snakebite, so that looseness is desirable. You'd have to play around with tube diameter and ability to still pull them on. Dad's didn't have any straps on the bottom but from what i can tell he never had issues with them riding up. I reckon he also used recycled canvas, possibly from a window awning. I can ask him for more detail if required.

Another option might be to buy a pair you like and get somewhere like Remote Repairs to sew a panel into them to make them wider. I don't see why this wouldn't be possible.

I've got a pair of OR Crocodiles in XXL if you're around Launceston and want to try them on.

Sewing in a big triangle wedge to increase room isn't difficult. It is unpicking the tunnel at the top of the gaiter that will be a lot of work. If you decide to send it off rather than sew your own, do the labour intensive unpicking yourself and save yourself $50- or more
