SCT & Southwest Cape Circuit

Postby Guido » Tue 22 Jan, 2019 12:45 am

Hi everyone,

From the 25th of January I will be hiking in the Southwest. Originally I planned a trip along the following route:
Start at Moonlight Ridge Track – Pindars Peak – Precipitous Bluff – Prion – Southwest Cape Circuit – Melaleuca (food drop) – Port Davey Track – Western Arthurs OR McKay’s Track – Huon Track.
Obviously, half of that route is now closed off but I will walk the southern part, start at Cockle Creek (if the Moonlight Ridge doesn’t re-open before friday, I’m still hoping) and backtrack the SCT or fly out after I’ve done the southwest cape circuit.
Like LouPhi, I am carrying an InReach device so people can follow me on my MapShare. The link is: https://eur-share.inreach.garmin.com/ggoudswaard.

Have a great long weekend, cheers, Guido

Hi Guido,

Looking on the https://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=7785 they state;

Latest track closures update
Monday 21 January 2019 – 6pm

Access to some parks and reserve areas are being managed for public safety as PWS staff continue to assess the current fire situation.

The following tracks, roads and areas have been closed until further notice:

Southwest National Park
Remote area walking tracks west of Maydena and Huonville are closed.

(This includes – Lake Rhona, Vale of Rasselas, The Spires, Lake Curly, Timbs Track, Twisted Sister, Denison Traverse, Styx Big Tree Reserve, Wylds Craig Track, Mt Wedge, The Needles, Marriotts Falls, Adamsfield Track, Mt Anne Circuit, Western Arthurs, Eastern Arthurs including Federation Peak, Mt Sprent, Frankland Range, Farmhouse Creek Track, Huon Track, Lake Skinner, Yoyo Track, Moonlight Ridge Track, Precipitous Bluff Circuit, Adamson’s Falls, Adamson’s Track, Duckhole Lake Track, Mystery Creek Track).

The reason for this is due to the fires that are burning in the area. Numerous hikers have already been air lifted from the South West Region and Parks/TasFire probably aren't keen for more people to get into a possible dangerous location. Looking at the long range forecast for Melaluca http://www.bom.gov.au/tas/forecasts/melaleuca.shtml there is some light rain scheduled given how quickly things can change in that area of Tas, i'd be careful of any 'planned' trips down that way...
