Current water - McAlister Springs and Camp Creek

Postby Xastorm » Wed 30 Jan, 2019 8:38 pm

Next overnighter planned is the Crosscut Saw to Mt Spec, if anyone's been up recently and can advise on the current water situation at both ends (more so Camp Creek..).

Cheers

There last weekend, reasonable flow at Mac Springs (about 1L/45Secs)
Equally reasonable flow at Camp Creek. Had 6mm rain on Saturday night and according to BOM 13mm today.

If you go then have look at the water situation in the Stanley Name spur gully , 1 km down from the X cut saw summit ridge. That is one of the King River sources.

Thanks for sharing the photos with us. It is one of the most magnificent parts of the Australian Alps. It seems like you had decent weather and not too many crowds. It is a long lonely drive out there to the Howitt Plains car park. Coming up from the Upper Howqua river involves less driving and more slogging it uphill on foot . I plan to walk up that way in late Spring 2019 via the Stanley Name spur track. In winter it is possibly quickest to access the Cross Cut saw from The Lake Cobbler area.It is a 12 km walk to Camp Creek from Lake Cobbler.
What condition was the Howitt Hut in?. It was falling down last time I was up that way a couple of summers ago.

One loop on foot that has appeal is the Howitt Plains Car park/ Macalister River/ King Billy Saddle/ King Billy 2 & 1 and over Mt. Magdala to Mt. Howitt and back to the car via the Gantner hut.

The Howitt Hut was reasonable, although I have no point of reference as it was my first visit, but certainly not at risk of falling down in a storm.

Certainly is magnificent out there. Can’t wait to get to Lake Cobbler and Mt Cobbler.

The Howitt Hut looks partially rebuilt now , judging by the photo.

Howitt Hut is a bit fancier than the Cobbler Hut.. I rode up there on the weekend and despite the 2 1/2h afternoon downpour, wasn't particularly tempted to seek shelter in that hut! The benefit of the rainy day was I had Lake Cobbler almost to myself.. only one van camped overnight :D

Did you scramble across/down the gap and up to the true Mt. Cobbler summit?. That is where the views are best.

Hi, was thinking of heading to the Crosscut next weekend. An update on current water situation for both McAlister Springs and Camp Creek would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

John

Mac Springs on 23 Feb took 3 mins+ to fill 1L bottle. Didnt see camp ck as took kids to Magdala. Howitt spring was tricking, cloudy/brown but usuable at a pinch. It's only occured to me to photograph water sources. Conveys more info.

Best going to this page to get closure information https://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/park ... ional-park
Mostly southern areas of the park involved including the AAWT.

Last I heard the spring was but a trickle. There has been some rain since then but things still seem quite dry around the mountains. Sorry to not be of more help.

Heyfield Office phone message (due to high volume of calls) is that all track closures will be lifted on 30 April sans Tali Karng walking tracks. One would suspect some change in water quality and quantity in the area given the recent fires however it would be great to have verified information. I may even have a wander myself.

I was talking to a bloke who was at Camp Creek, Mt Speculation, a week ago and said it was flowing OK. He also said that Cobbler Lake had water but wasn't overflowing.
