Walls Circuit: Classic or Junction - Chapter Circuit?

Postby rangersac » Fri 08 Mar, 2019 1:42 pm

Opinions sought. In short got a mainland mate coming down in a few weeks for a 3 day/night hike. We were planning on doing the Mt Anne circuit but the fires put paid to that so thinking of the Walls as an alternative (along with the everyone else it seems) which I've never done. So should we do the Classic circuit via Lake Ball, and if so does anyone know how the Zion Vale track is looking at the moment for something slightly more adventurous? Or should we do an Adelaide - Meeston - Junction - Chapter Lake circuit with Tent Tarn an option if the weather is good? Workmate swears to me this is the best 3 night hike in Tassie.

Blizzard Plains to Meston is a bit shorter and the carparks are closer together so there's less road walking if you don't have two vehicles, and you have the option of Rogoona if the Cathedral plateau feels like it might be too long a sidetrip. Or start and finish with the end of the road, going up via Jacksons Creek and back via Moses/Cloister.
There isn't a proper track all the way down Zion Vale. There's a pad from Dixon's which joins the track proper near the Ball hut. In good conditions another option for that route is to go up Solomons and follow the Wailing Wall south to Moriah. Short but steep and sometimes rough descent down to the track.

There are so many options at the Walls. It's hard to go past the central Walls - especially as an intro to the area - but you'll see fewer people on the other tracks.

Thanks NNW, Jackson’s creek does look like a good option. If the peaks are socked in that could be a good Plan B

Last week we went in via Moses Creek track to Grail Falls and up to Tent tarn for 2 nights with a day on Cathedral/Twin spires, then back to Grail Falls and out to Junction for a night (lots of fish jumping), then to Lake Meston, a Mt Rogoona side trip and on to Lake Myrtle for a night, then out the Jackson Creek track by lunchtime. All the tent sites were great! The tracks were pretty clear. It is indeed an excellent 3 nighter. We saw almost no-one.
