That's the one Lops. I'm a couple of km east of Grey Mare Hut so that would be Ghost Hill right of center with Valentine Falls and the Geehi down the valley.

Thanks. I would have guessed the Tumut and when that was not the answer I thought of the creeks near Grey Mare Hut. I've been down Valentine falls and up the vally in the pic, a very nice walk, but the descent by the falls is now overgrown.

The pic below is in Victoria. The name of the pic is totally incorrect, but I cannot help that. I'm still getting used to Windows XP and renaming files. I'm okay with DOS 6.

You're standing beside the Mt Bogong cairn, I reckon.

A very colourful sunrise on a recent Victorian trip - where am I ? (yeah, I know - the game is "where it it" but I think "where am I" will be easier for this one - but either will do :)

Time for a hint ??

I'm on the peak of a named mountain, west of a N-S line through Melbourne. Here's a close-up of the skyline :

No, not MMP. There is a tower on Mt William but this isn't it.

I'm north of a line drawn between Mt William and Melbourne.

I do not have a map and the online maps are rubbish. Langi Ghiran, Ben Nevis or therebouts to Mount Cole, which has a big tower.

One of them's a possibility. I'm not even bothering to consult a map, because there's so little evidence to go on -- for me, at least. (And I thought I'd put up some cryptic or obscure items.)

But how about Mt Wycheproof, supposedly "the lowest mountain on the planet"?

In the correct area, Lop. It is, indeed the Mt Cole tower (distinctive if you know it).

So, given I'm on a named peak and I'm looking East for the sunrise. .....

No, not in the Grampians. You were close with the original your second guesses.

edit : oops, that might have been a little misleading - sorry Lop.
