Bungonia Slot Track

Postby edgar_ali » Mon 06 May, 2019 12:33 pm

I wonder if anyone out there has got information about the Bungonia Slot Track. This track goes on top of the cliff along the slot canyon. This is different to the red track.

I suspect you are actually referring to the red track. Which does a reasonably challenging loop down to the bottom of the gorge and return.

In the NSW govt topo map there is track named the "slot track" that decends from just before Mount Ayre down to bungonia creek.

On openstreetmaps and by the nsw national Park authority that same track is considered part of the red track loop.

There is also a track on 'google maps' which is called 'the slot track' but it's actually the red track.

When you say 'goes along the top' there is the tourist class green track that goes along the top and connects the various lookouts and can also be used to reach the trailheads of the red and white tracks that head down into the gorge and shoalhaven river valley.

There is also the yellow track that also ventures around the tops.

The red track also goes along the top during the upper part of the loop

Check out the nsw national parks website on bungonia gorge if you haven't already there is a PDF of the tracks around the area.

The red and green tracks are formal routes. As ww says the red track is a nice circuit down through the canyon and the green track sticks to the tops. There is a track down to the top of the slot canyon but it isn't named to my knowledge (might be the slot track?). If you head along the red track clockwise from the carpark, there is an unmarked track to the right only a few mins from the carpark that takes you steeply down to an outcrop where there are a number of climbing anchors (and often stashed ropes) at the rim of the slot. There are a range of pads along the top of the slot (don't go too close to the edge!). This is different to the red track which goes down via a gully to the bottom and then swings east into the canyon (if going clockwise).
