Recommendations for electronic map

Postby Petew » Fri 24 May, 2019 7:01 am

Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations on a app/offline GPS map for use on a phone of the Overland track?

I am taking a map and compass but like the convenience of a phone map.

Preferably something free or inexpensive. I have used memory map before but it's $100 and my wallet is already hurting bad....

Cheers,

Pete

Hi Petew,

I use Avenza Maps on my iphone. I think the app itself is free (or at least, cheap) and each TASMAP costs $1.50 or I bought the whole Overland Track & Walls of J collection for $13.
It works offline.

Cheers,

Dee

Thanks everyone, I should have mentioned I'm using Android. I'll check them out.

There is quite a bit of 'set up' (read hitting head on wall) with most of them. :(

For Osmand I have ... in the pedestrian mode..

Map style - Osmand
Details - enabled;
More details
Show road surface
Show access restrictions
Colour-code buildings by type

Routes - enabled;
Hiking symbol overlay - Colouring according to OSMC

I think everything else is in the default mode. I think that gives me the info I want. Note that it has other modes of operation for bicycling and car driving.. you can set each up in what ever way you want. And it is possible to edit how it displays things too. But try it first with the above 'easy' set up.

Been having a play with it. Is there a legend anywhere?

Not quite upto date
https://osmand.net/help-online/map-legend

Missing ridges.. and possibly other things...

Note .. if you select other map styles then the legend will change...

if what ever it is does not appear in Osmand then it may not be in OSM .. check if it is there and add it if it is not there. Wait a month or two and update the Osmand map ... if using the free version it is limited to so many down loads.

Warin,

Thanks heaps for all the tips. Got it set up now with less head banging on wall than I would have had without your advice.

Looks the goods.

I have always used Gaia GPS, the maps are free, you can download the entire map for the overland track prior to departing and you will be set.

This is my go to app.

OSMAnd has worked well for me for two trips now. It doesn't have every single detail in it, but it's easy enough to upload waypoints and other data. Cheap and "good enough" for me.
