Camping near Snowy South

Postby Tortoise » Wed 02 Jan, 2019 9:12 am

We now will be travelling in a less reliable car, so I'd rather start at the Snowy South carpark than the Nevada one for those 2 peaks, as nice as Snowdrift Tarns sound. From photos/videos I've seen, I think we'll have trouble finding reasonable spots for a couple of one-person tents anywhere on Snowy South, with the rocks and low alpine scrub. But maybe there are some.
Ta muchly for any thoughts on this.

Never done it before, but this photo I took appears to show some open, flattish areas south of the unnamed tarn just below the summit of Snowy South. It isn't really on the way to Nevada Peak though, so not sure how helpful it'd be.

Appreciate that, L. I did check out your YouTube video (great resource, thanks). I found a closer-up photo elsewhere that looks very rocky under vegetation on any flattish bits near that tarn. I don't actually need it to be on the way to Nevada - just somewhere higher than the car that makes it possible for us to do Nevada as a day walk from there. My friend isn't into 12+ hour days, and I'm not fast uphill. I thought making it into an overnighter would help. But with my dodgy car, I'd rather only take it to places we're more likely to come across the odd bushwalker, just in case. Hence giving up Snowdrift Tarns. :(

No worries! If only that snowy south video wasn't one of the most boring pieces of footage I've put together then perhaps it'd be more interesting to watch haha ;)

I second what Lucas mentioned as to the flat areas around the tarn. There are also small flattish terraces nearer to the summit on the eastern side that would probably do the job although they are mostly covered in pineapple grass. BTW I have always ascended Snowy South by turning left and heading south at the unnamed tarn and following the pineapple grass slopes NW to the summit - Much nicer than the cairned boulder hopping route. I can also recall a tiny tent site just to the west of Falls Outlet along Skinners shoreline.
I drove to the Nevada Car Park twice in April last year - (or as close as you can get now) and I would say that if your car can make it to the Skinner Car park it will have no problems making it to the latter.....and Snowdrift is most certainly the best campsite on the range IMO.
I lika do da cha-cha

Hi I’m keen to hear how you went with your hike? I’ve been considering doing this one as an overnighter as I have been up to Snowy South wit my dad but as a day walk ..we stopped at the unnamed tarn just below snowy south for lunch when the fog rolled in. Nice little spot to camp but from memory it was quite rocky & not the best spots to set up a tent?

Hi Footsteps,
Unfortunately the fires happened.
I'm hoping a number of my planned southern walks will be possible next summer, but I'm not holding my breath re access.

I walked with two friends from Snowy South carpark to Nevada Peak last year, either July or October school holidays. We crossed the saddle to Nevada and camped in some flattish areas among the stunted trees. Most parts were fairly wet but we managed to find some suitable sites without too much trouble.

Plenty of camping up there. The little tarns on the east side of Snowy South are lovely:
