You're right about the general area, vagrom. The photos are within the map you posted.

vagrom wrote:Near but far suggests proximity to Larapinta?

The previous photo was taken from a ridge that's 14km from the Larapinta. When I said "So near but yet so far", I meant that the upper reach of the gorge is near the camera, but no-one has managed to get to it yet.

eggs wrote:Portals Canyon, Chewing Range?

Oh you're good, eggs, very good. But not quite good enough yet.

Portals Canyon is in many ways similar to this canyon, and it only took us one day to walk from one to the other. And yes, it's in the Chewings Range.

Here are some more clues.

The canyon comprises four reaches with separate access. From the campsite, you can walk upstream (past some attractive pools) and clamber along the Main Reach, but you soon arrive at a rockpile which cannot be passed without a rope. To get to Meg's Reach you start by climbing up the ridge on the left of the canyon, roughly following the yellow line in the photo. To get to Alexa's Reach, you must climb further up this ridge and locate Ribuck Ramp. And I presume the Upper Reach will one day be accessed from above.

It would help if I had a map of the area, but in its absence, I can only suggest Red Gorge past Ellery Creek.
Curiously, your last description seems to fit Chapmans report of exploring above Portals Canyon??

A good suggestion eggs, but Red Gorge is too close to Portals Canyon to be a day's walk away.

eggs wrote:Curiously, your last description seems to fit Chapmans report of exploring above Portals Canyon??

Yes, Portals Canyon and this one are similar in many ways. The same defiant person conducted the first non-indigenous exploration of the slot section of Portals Canyon (in 1999), and of Meg's Reach of this canyon (in 1992).

Chapman's report? Are you referring to the following page:
http://www.john.chapman.name/nt-chew.html
The route described by Chapman doesn't visit this canyon, though it gets within 2 hours' walk of the canyon mouth.

eggs wrote:It would help if I had a map of the area

May I suggest you use the aerial photo which forms the background of the following GPS trace by Marklav:
https://www.wikiloc.com/mountaineering- ... ge-5191560
Click "full screen" and zoom in. Marklav didn't visit this canyon, though he passed by. I think someone here will be able to match up the satellite view with the "view from above" and "view from below" photos that I posted earlier.

Anyway, here are some more clues:

Noone else is following the breadcrumbs?
Shame - it looks wonderful. So you have called this Canyon of Defiance?

eggs wrote:So you have called this Canyon of Defiance?

No, I didn't name the canyon. The only names I have coined are Ribuck Ramp, Meg's Reach and Alexa's Reach, and I'm not emotionally attached to those names so feel free to call them whatever you like.

But Canyon of Defiance is the correct answer. Well done! You worked hard to win that.

Not many bushwalkers visit the Canyon of Defiance because most bushwalkers prefer to be on the south side of the Chewings Range at this point.

I had an ulterior motive for posting this canyon to the game. I have just posted an invitation in the Find Walking Companions forum for participants on an 8-day trip to Canyon of Defiance in early September:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=29958

The Canyon of Defiance was named in 1991 by Frank Rigby, who wrote the book Bushwalking in the MacDonnell Ranges. He was on a trip with Meg McKone of CMW, who wrote: "We could look down into the amphitheatre and see the white rocks at the bottom of the creek as it headed into a canyon and disappeared from sight around a huge red bulge in the cliffs, only to reappear before dropping to the plains below. The slopes down into the gorge looked impossibly steep and the step onto the plains might have an impassable drop. As we mused over a possible name, Frank Rigby suggested ‘The Canyon of Defiance’, a tribute to its seemingly impregnable nature."

In 1992 Meg McKone found a way into part of the canyon (hence "Meg's Reach"), but the party could not get beyond the Pebble Bowl. She wrote: "We felt as if we were diving into the bowels of the earth, surrounded by glowing red and gold walls as we followed the canyon round the ‘Big Red Bulge’, straddling pools and wriggling up behind a chock-stone until we reached a bowl full of rounded pebbles beneath an impassable drop. Though the canyon continued above us, we couldn’t climb into it."

On subsequent trips, Meg tried to find a way into higher reaches of the canyon from the side and from above, but did not succeed. You can read more about the early exploration of the Canyon of Defiance and Portals Canyon on page 20 here:
https://www.cmw.asn.au/application/file ... ticles.pdf

It was not until last month, 27 years later, that I found Ribuck Ramp which leads into the reach above the Pebble Bowl. I refer to this as Alexa's Reach because Alexandra Bullen was the first to walk to the end of the main chasm of that reach. You can see where we went, and some more photos, at Wikiloc:
https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/c ... s-37899281

This was near the end of our trip, and we did not have time to explore much further, which is why I'm planning to return there in September, and inviting others to join me.

A pleasant spot indeed, but only when it's a pleasant night.

This one, in NSW, is a pleasant spot even on an unpleasant night:

It's not anywhere near Mt Bushwalker, fat boy, nor anywhere in Morton/Budawangs. Which leaves the other general area of NSW camping caves...

The cave is known by the name of the nearby creek, so the creek name is all I'm looking for. Not far away, on the same creek, is this delightful walk-through canyon and ferny grotto:

To get the ball rolling I'm going to guess somewhere near the wollangambie river, bungeleboori creek? Just a random stab in the dark though.

Someone else will need to narrow it down. There are a stack of camp caves and canyons in the area. Sadly Ive only visted a couple of them.

Il have one go even though I'm sure fairly sure it's wrong. Dingo creek?

That's right, johnw, it's at the very top end of Dumbano Creek. I know the features as Dumbano Creek Cave and Suboir Canyon, but the canyon is also called Dumbano Tunnels. Not the same as Dumbano Canyon which is further downstream. Lovely area.

Thanks ribuck, I know some of that area but not visited that specific locale.

NSW. For this I'm really looking for the name of the feature I'm on. Anything else gets bonus points.
I've walked from a hut on this feature for about 20 minutes to this spot.
