Those are both pretty reasonable assumptions John, and are also correct. I am approaching the village and airstrip from the north.

I know this is a bushwalking forum not a history forum but: the Australian war photographer Damien Parer took a very well known photograph near this village in early September 1942. It shown Lt Col Ralph Honner addressing a parade of the ragged, bloodied, few remaining members of the 39th Battalion AMF and to me, if ever a picture was worth a thousand words, this one is worth a million. There was no airstrip there in 1942.

I'm sure my late father-in-law would enlighten me, having served in PNG during WW2 and eventually had some experience as a military historian/author.
My own research tells me Menari Village.

It is indeed Menari, viewed from a point on the Kokoda track about one hours walk south west from Brigade Hill. It is a pretty distinctive and memorable view on this walk.
The Where is it International Game seems to have lost some momentum of late while the Tasmanian game is thriving, there must be a reason for that!!!
Maybe some of the international locations are too lesser known, but there is nothing interesting about identifying a well known location either.

Thanks Greg, I'm sure Kokoda would be memorable and thought provoking.
All the games have slowed but there is often a flurry of activity follow by quiet periods. I now seem have the current photo in all 3 games (again) .
It's all a bit historical as this whole site was originally developed for Tasmania only, and then evolved over time into other things. The original Tassie game has a strong base of very experienced bushwalkers and peakbaggers and has always been popular. The Aussie game was introduced at a point where the majority of forum members were from outside Tasmania and expectations were that NSW and VIC would dominate. The international game was created as a request from a Kiwi member and it was thought that most photos likely to be from NZ, as many Aussies also walk there. I'm fortunate to have done some overseas travel which helps with posting photos. Having retired 12 months ago I have a bit more free time now than I did, but not everyone has that luxury. Also happy to research the more obscure photos when I can, but others may not have the time.

That said I managed to unearth another train photo from the archives and scan it. Europe:
