Anyone 'regressed' to CCF?

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.
Forum rules
TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

If Melbourne wasn't so far away I'd take my ruckie in there and see. I still think I'd struggle with the fixed width of the panels.

Great minds think alike?! I would be tempted to cut the Exped Flexmat short size down even smaller and do full length Thinlight on top, would all still be sub 300g I reckon and be mid to high '2's' for R value. What would your combo of lengths etc be?

I am pondering CCF stashed in say, Durston pack large side pocket. That would cover half the mat from scrapes and have the rest of it flush with the pack, rather than sticking out horizontally. Inside is far better though.

Just checked and the Exped Flexmat orange has an R value if 1.5, vs nemo switchback 2.0

Perhaps as a summer mat, a torso flexmat would be a very good solution for 165g. Anyone wanna go halves in a full size?

I tested my lengths for sleeping last night. I can actually fit my shoulders, hips and even past my knees on 7 sections half full length switchback = 205g.

If a person does a lot of walking above 5 degrees (lets face it that's alot of the year for most Ozzies) this mat and a 400 gram (200gms of 850Cuin down) total quilt would be sweeeeet assssss. Come on you know you want to... :D

Yep, I mucked around and found the 1.45m I cut my other CCF at was perfect for me and kept most of my legs of the ground/floor. But with a 3mm making up the length the other mat could be shorter sat 1.2m. :D :D

A person could just go and get a TR Uberlite, for 200grams, and $200, (but I'd still have to inflate it) but I reckon I'd pop that thing too soon and carrying a torso piece to try and protect it might just not work as I reckon it's likely my upper body movements- sitting etc that will kill it.
So this is, my bushwalkin' cobber, my Murray Cod solution. :D

The uberlite does not appeal at all to me, inflation, bah who can be bothered and the expense and risk of breaking, all together too much fuss

Yeah I am in, going to get the Flexmat and chop it in half. Not a huge spend for me given that CCF is my new bedroom suite and I even packed a bit of it for interstate travel.
You want the other half ? Consider it a fair trade for the windshirt you PIF'ed to me.

I tried sleeping on TWO CCF mats on Friday night.

Worst nights sleep I've had for years. :-(

No good! Which two were the culprits? Was it at home or in your tent?

I have slept every night (well some days as I work night shift) on CCF since the start of Feb, so figured sleeping in my tent would equal similar blissful sleep as I am so used to CCF now on tiles, timber floors etc. Not so, the first night out, I just sleep plain bad regardless of comfort and familiarity with sleep surface. I am restless and unsettled, it isn't until the second night when I relax into a trip I think- or get so tired I am not on hyperalert for axe murderers.

I think there probably are big differences, but I am not much across tech specs.
My Army son sleeps on a cheap bit of CCF same as you get from the bargain shops and deals okay with that, I think it would be insulating enough for most conditions.
I seem to have discovered a liking for the egg crate sorts as they seem a bit squishy.
I do intend to try sleeping on my Gossamer Gear Thinlight, doubled up as a torso mat, but suspect that will be pushing my new found love of foam a bit. I will not undertake that challenge until I know I can afford to be tired and grumpy the next day ;-)

Some you'll see may be PE some EVA. Plus there are more variations. A bit of a difference in at least those two, yes.

I usually sleep better on the first night of walk... I think I'm moderately used to being out bush in a tent, and I find it very relaxing. Like my home away from home.

For this particular tent-based "car-camping" (not bushwalking) trip, I bought two double-bed sized CCFs from BCF. The idea was that when sharing the tent with my wife, we could have one matress, instead of two (and a gap/seam in the middle). Would never have tried this bushwalking, as they take up way too much space, but I thought it was worth a shot for camping in our tent at the beach.

Thankfully, I also grabbed out bushwalking matresses on the way out the door... just in case. So we slept much better the following two nights. :-)

I used to use CCF when I first started bushwalking. But I've gotten used to my creature comforts, I think. Plus I'm a few decades older. Gotta look after myself a bit.

But it was a worthwhile experience. We now know that the double-bed sized CCFs we bought are exactly the right size for our tent, so when it comes to buying a nice cushy self-inflating mattress for us to share on future car-camping trips, I will know what size to look out for. :-)

In a previous post I referred to the Fakirs and their practices and to add to this category, there are those that for various reasons cause themselves to suffer pain, presumably to gain enlightenment etc. The “Flagellants”had historically not yet discovered CCF but they may have put it to good use if they had done so :-)

Great idea to have a back up plan!
So -BCF CCF NFW. :D
That's interesting. Never seen a double one. I thought two at about the 10mm might do the trick.
Was it this one? https://www.bcf.com.au/p/wanderer-eva-s ... 5#start=12
There are no specs. Is it 10mm thick can you tell me please beachy.

I think that's the one. Price looks the same.

I haven't measured its thickness, but I would guess it's a tad less than 10mm. Maybe 7-8mm -ish.

How is everyone doing with their CCF?
After recently using my STS mat which completely deflated during the night, even on hard gravel campsites I wasn’t bothered so figure I may as well go down this road.
Like others I have spent nights on the floor and find this my best sleep!
Thinking of adding a Crazy Creek chair which seems like it could be layered underneath. So a heavier sleeping pad overall but with the additional luxury of a chair, and no worries about punctures etc.

I'm wondering if it is worth the near half kilo? I haven't weighed gear for some time but was pretty sure ccf wasn't that heavy!

Overall something like the Exped is cheaper and more versatile to add a foamy to an existing air mat, vs forking out hundreds for a fancy winter inflatable.

This 1.8m blue folder gets a 2.2R value at 480g:

Still going CCf'ing strong here.
My first property chilly winter trip since switching to it. I took my cut in half exped flex mat, was going to just double the gg thinlight over it, but chose my klymit inertia x lite torso inflatable (its like a cut out frame) for a total of 300g, pack for my legs. Was comfy as, felt no cool from the ground. The ccf mat made for a great lounging seat too.
Having fun with all the ccf options, I can't see myself wanting to go back to a proper inflatable.

Looks as though there’s a bit of a wait for the Thinlight.

Another thought was a folding CCF with the addition of this: https://www.wildearth.com.au/buy/therma ... S221-09947. Does double duty as a seat plus additional padding/insulation under shoulders or hips if required.
