Description
At 1340m above sea level, Black Bluff is the highest peak along the Penguin-Cradle Trail. Black Bluff is a true alpine mountain experience which includes a glacial cirque tarn (a rounded like basin surrounded by cliffs) called Paddy's Lake. It sits below Black Bluff and is the northern most feature of its kind in Tasmania.
The usual route to Black Bluff is via the Brookes Track, but it is also accessible from Winterbrook Falls using either the Tramway Track or Maxwell Track - the shortest, easiest route and then climbing via the "Eye of the Needle".
The route across the plateau is a footpad very sparsely marked with poles, pinktape and cairns; exposed in all directions so windy conditions will be extremely challenging. There is a trig marking the summit and a small bunkhole style shelter nearby.
