Aurora now

Just had call from a fellow aurora enthusiast who had heard reports of auora being seen from Sandy Bay, Bicheno and Wynyard an hour ago. Dressed up in winter gear, out towards favourite aurora spotting site, looked to south - no stars! :( Only clear patch of sky was overhead but if you're in the right place now it could be worth checking. Apparently likely to be seen from southern NZ too - fading in and out but worth waiting for.

Beautiful, just went looking for it to discover that the one area of the sky that isn't showing stars here is the south :(

Here's one from Tinderbox. Such a beautiful night and a great atmosphere with 'aurora hunters' congregating around the various locations, squeeling, ooohhh-ing and aaahhh-ing as the sky put on it's silent show.

I was out by myself in the midlands, no company :( Not surprised though as I was feeling very nervous trying to take photographs with the sound of gun shot all around :? Noone told me it was such a dangerous pastime!

Were the local rednecks worried the lights were the start of an alien invasion so they decided to put up a fight?

Absolutely - but incredibly frustrating at times!
Thanks for the superb photos SBS and sam, even though I'm now green with envy.

For those that are interested in this the ABC had a feature tonight. Bushwalkers in Tasmania have a unique opportunity if they keep their eyes on the southern skies :)

PS tomorrow night looks good if the skies are clear

How about this one, both aurora and noctilucent clouds captured in a mesmerising time-lapse video. Be warned, it's mildly nauseating!

May as well post this one too, the guy captured some exploding meteors while filming a time-lapse of this years perseid meteor shower

Wow, awesome footage. I'm planning on experimenting with some time lapse footage, I've made up a contraption that I will be testing in the next few weeks with my GoPro camera.
