Iceberg off Macquarie Island

Postby tasadam » Tue 10 Nov, 2009 9:07 am

Macquarie Island expeditioners were treated to a rare sight this week with a huge iceberg floating past the island.
The iceberg is about 8 kilometres off the north-west of the island and is estimated to be about 50 metres high and 500 metres long.

50 metres high and 500 metres long, that is one serious chunk of ice.

That's pretty cool.

Ol Dick ought to drag it back to Sydney Harbour.

Footage of the iceberg was on TV news tonight. It's thought to have broken away about 10 years ago, and has been floating around since. Apparently the visible bit above the waterline is only about a third of the whole thing. Impressive :) .

Please don't give Dick any more bright ideas

The standard ratio is 10% above 90% below meaning Dick will have a bit of trouble with the Continental shelf
